  5. Eternal Security • John 6:35 And Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst.” • John 5:24 “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life.” • Rom. 8:38-39 For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, 39 nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. • ONCE SAVED, ALWAYS SAVED

Warning Passage (Sign) • Heb. 4:4-8 ~ 4For it is impossible, in the case of those who have once been enlightened, who have tasted the heavenly gift, and have shared in the Holy Spirit, 5and have tasted the goodness of the word of God and the powers of the age to come, 6and then have fallen away, to restore them again to repentance, since they are crucifying once again the Son of God to their own harm and holding him up to contempt. 7For land that has drunk the rain that often falls on it, and produces a crop useful to those for whose sake it is cultivated, receives a blessing from God. 8But if it bears thorns and thistles, it is worthless and near to being cursed and its end is to be burned.

  7. Saved or Unsaved? • 1) once been enlightened • 2) tasted the heavenly gift • 3) partakers(shared) of the Holy Spirit • 4) tasted the goodness of the word of God • 5) tasted the powers of the age to come • SAVED!!!!!!!!!

  8. What does it mean? • Fallen away? Impossible to restore them to repentance? • Does falling away here mean apostasy? • Note the previous warnings in Hebrews (2:1, 3:6, 3:12, 4:11)

  9. Heb. 2:1-We must pay the most careful attention, therefore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away. • Heb. 3:6b-But Christ is faithful as the Son over God’s house. And we are his house, if indeed we hold firmly to our confidence and the hope in which we glory • Heb. 3:12-Take care, brothers, lest there be in any of you an evil, unbelieving heart, leading you to fall away from the living God (See 1 John 2:15) • Heb. 4:11-Let us therefore strive to enter that rest, so that no one may fall by the same sort of disobedience.

What does it mean? • Heb. 6:7-8 The author is using an illustration otherwise known as picture language. • It is not literal • “burned” does not mean hell, it is symbolic of the severe discipline that follows “falling away” • Is this concept unfathomable? Where else in Scripture have we seen this? (See Num. 14:22-24, Ps. 95:7-11) • Unfortunately it is entering a state where God is displeased with you. Rd. 1 Cor. 10

Issue of Maturity not Eternity • Heb. 5:11-14 and it is hard to explain, since you have become dull of hearing. 12For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the basic principles of the oracles of God. You need milk, not solid food, 13for everyone who lives on milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, since he is a child. 14But solid food is forthe mature, for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil. • 1 Cor. 3:1-3 And I, brethren, could not speak to you as to spiritual people but as to carnal, as to babes in Christ. 2I fed you with milk and not with solid food; for until now you were not able to receive it, and even now you are still not able; 3 for you are still carnal. For where there are envy, strife, and divisions among you, are you not carnal and behaving like mere men?

  12. Warning Passage (Sign) • Heb. 10:26-31 ~ For if we go on sinning deliberately after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, 27 but a fearful expectation of judgment, and a fury of fire that will consume the adversaries. 28 Anyone who has set aside the law of Moses dies without mercy on the evidence of two or three witnesses. 29How much worse punishment, do you think, will be deserved by the one who has spurned the Son of God, and has profaned the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified, and has outraged the Spirit of grace? 30For we know him who said "Vengeance is mine; I will repay." And again "The Lord will judge his people." 31It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

  13. What does is mean? • v. 26 “sinning deliberately” – persistent, consistent • v. 26 “no longer remains a sacrifice for sins” – Jesus’ sacrifice was once for all, no animal sacrifice can be made that is better than Jesus’ sacrifice • v. 27 there is nothing in this context that is speaking of hell, “fire” is speaking of the judgment to follow “deliberate continual” sin. • What about “adversary”? See Matt. 16:21-23

  14. What does it mean? • v. 28-29 just as the OT had its punishment for law breaking, so there is penalty in NT for dismissing the blood of the Son of God • Again we are still talking of a believer notice the statement “by which he was sanctified,” past tense meaning the person being described has already been saved • v. 29-31 notice the “the Lord will judge His people.” Have you ever heard of unbelievers called “his people” ?????

  15. Putting the Pieces Together • What is a warning? • It is preventative maintenance. A heads up, a chance to avoid a bad outcome. • Just like walking a path we see signs that say “Danger, Quick Sand Ahead” we will tread cautiously, that is all these verses are.

  16. Warning Signs • We see that these passages are caution signs for us along the path of our Christian lives, we must take heed and so that we do not drift away (Hebrews 2:1)

  17. Warning Signs • Take heed, listen to the word, stay close, don’t drift away, and do so before you go over. • The only falling you want to do is falling more in love with Jesus…the overall message of Hebrews
