  2. Clarifying objective: 7.L.1.1 • Compare the structures and life functions of single-celled organisms that carry out all the basic functions of life including: Euglena, Amoeba, Paramecium, and Volvox.

  3. Things to think about: -How do living things move? -How do living things eat? -Do all living things contain cells? Is a cell a living thing?

  4. What are Protozoa (of the Protist Kingdom)? Protozoa (1st animals) -classified by how they move.

  5. Autotrophsmake their own food. • -Photosynthetic autotrophs make their own food using energy from light. • -Chemosynthetic autotrophsdo the same thing using energy obtained from the breakdown of chemicals. • Heterotrophs require food as they cannot make their own.  • -by ingestion eat by consuming food. • - by absorption eat by secreting digestive enzymes outside of their bodies, then absorbing the nutrients into their bodies.

  9. Amoeba 1. How the organism obtains food Heterotrophic: uses pseudopodsto feed by engulfing the prey and incorporating it into their cytoplasm. 2. How the organism moves by pseudopods (false feet) temporary extensions of the cell - in any direction 3. Any unique characteristics Have no definite shape or form

  10. Paramecium • 1. How the organism obtains food: • Heterotrophic • 2. How the organism moves: • Cilia • 3. Any unique characteristics: • has a definite shape. Their spindle-shaped body has anterior and posterior ends, although they dart backwards or forwards very swiftly
