The Ottoman Empire • Based on strong military tactics, which were a part of Turkish heritage • Expanded empire by training Christian boys, a process called devshirme, in the ways of military, creating Janissaries (gun carrying foot soldiers) or in the ways of politics, creating knowledgeable palace advisors/officials • Incorporated non-Muslims into society for military and economic benefit

Portuguese Expansion • Attempted and succeeded in colonization of the Americas (Brazil, and Central America) • Created plantations in order to obtain a larger profit for the mother country in Europe, with cash crops such as tobacco and sugar cane • Focused efforts on profit increase and the discovery of goods to trade to expand wealth

  4. Ottoman vs. Portuguese Similarities: Both imperial societies controlled vast amounts of territory: the Ottomans- Egypt, Iran, Syria, Mediterranean. The Portuguese- Brazil, Central America, Atlantic Islands. Both societies created new cultures as a result of their supremacy: the Portuguese- African/American/Spanish blends, such as mulatto, creole and mestizo. The Ottoman- a blend of Christian, Jewish and Hindu (after many merchants convened in the cities of Istanbul and Baghdad.

Ottoman vs. Portuguese Differences • The Ottoman Empire focused their efforts on expansion and power, receiving economic benefit from goods and people along the way. • The Portuguese set out in search of wealth and goods to trade while establishing a new colony for their European country. The effects of their presence are still felt in today’s world.
