  2. Americans Pull Together • People that recovered from the Depression would continue to “pinch pennies.” • When farms would come up for auction, farmers would secretly have penny auctions. • Prevented neighbors from losing everything.

  3. Success of penny auctions led some states to pass laws suspending foreclosures on farms. • In 1930’s 250,000 teenagers were “riding the rails.” • Some involuntarily. • Some for adventure.

  4. Drepression gave some new political parties power-Communist and Socialist. • People turned to humor: Hoovervilles. • Hoover Flags-pocket turned inside out. • Hoover Blankets-newspaper for blanket, etc.

  5. Signs of Change • Feb 1933, prohibition (18th amend.) is repealed. • 21st Amend. • Failed social experiment too much organized crime. • 8 states continued to ban alcohol.

  6. Empire State Building, John J. Raskob-developer, began construction in 1930. • Cost $41 mill employed 2,500 to 4,000 people on any given day. • 102 stories. • Opened May 1, 1931. • Hoover flipped the switch from D.C.

  7. End of Era • Carefree days of ’20s were gone. • Al Capone went to jail, Coolidge died, Babe Ruth retired, Lindbergh baby kidnapped.
