  2. Areas of Focus • Building the base of support • Raising money for communications infrastructure in Africa • Raising money to support new congregations • Raising money to support scholarships and fellowships in religion journalism

  3. Accomplishments • $35,157 raised year-to-date • $446,000 in outstanding requests • 100% giving by Foundation Trustees and staff • 2 new trustees recruited • Circle of Hope in place • Lots of solicitations underway or planned

  4. Africa Communications • First area of focus for the Central Conference Communications Initiative • Identified highest priority needs based on input from clergy and lay leaders in Africa • Developed initiative to fund 14 conference communications centers in Africa

  5. Africa Communications • Partnership with Africa Conferences, UM Publishing House, GBOD and UMCom • Includes providing printed resources as well as communications infrastructure • Infrastructure includes computers, equipment to develop stories, community radio capacity, hand-held and ham radio

  6. Conference Communications Centers • Cost is $14,000 each –$196,000 to be raised by June 2006 • Provides: • Equipment • Training • Salary Support • Opportunity to share stories and build relationships

  7. Igniting New Congregations • 3-year pilot program to develop models for communications training and resources to support new church starts • Partnership with the Fitzgerald Program and General Board of Discipleship • 5 churches will participate in the pilot project; 1 will be selected from each jurisdiction

Igniting New Congregations • Research in the Southeastern Jurisdiction indicates that only 15.3% of 2000-2005 UMC new church starts have successfully obtained their charters • We can apply what we’ve learned through Igniting Ministry and build on that success to help new churches survive and thrive

  9. Igniting New Congregations • Pastors lack training regarding how to share their message with the community • New Churches make missteps because there is no model to guide marketing efforts • Marketing funds are frequently used ineffectively and are undervalued

Igniting New Congregations • Test and develop effective marketing strategies to support 4 distinct models for new church starts • Achieve average Sunday attendance of 200 or more people at the pilot churches participating in the program • Create a New Church Marketing Kit and distribute to 500 new church planters • Provide training and on-line resources to support new church starts

How can you help? • Keep these efforts in your prayers • Make a personal gift • Think about churches or conferences with existing relationships in Africa—help us connect with them to determine if they will partner with the church in Africa to establish a conference communications center • Help us connect with individuals or organizations that would be interested in supporting the work in Africa, Igniting New Congregations or scholarships to support religion journalists
