Mission And Vision In addition to a core college preparatory curriculum, Pacific Collegiate School will emphasize international, cross-cultural, and technological education in order to prepare graduates for life in a global society. Pacific Collegiate students will be introduced to the rich variety of world cultures and become fluent in at least one foreign language. They will become proficient in the basic information technologies essential for cultural literacy in our global society.

What Are The Goals Of PCS? • To provide an education where the focus is ongoing beyond the core academic curriculum, emphasizing accelerated and Advanced Placement courses. • A minimum of 5 AP classes are required for graduation. • To promote an inclusive, small-school community. • To promote global citizenship and technological literacy. • To provide the advantages of a 7-12th environment.

  9. Are There Any Admission Requirements? • As a public school, PCS is open to all. There are no admission requirements. • PCS maintains high expectations for students—there is no social promotion. The rigorous college preparatory curriculum is A-G aligned. Students should come prepared to work hard. • Once enrolled, a student must maintain a C- in each course to be promoted to the subsequent class. Grade level promotion is by credits earned.

World Languages Department • We require 3 years in one language and recommend students take four years in one language culminating with an AP offering. • Many students elect to take two languages during their time at PCS. Spanish 1, 2, 3 & AP French 1, 2, 3 & 4/AP Latin 1, 2, 3, AP/Literature Chinese 1, 2, 3, 4 & AP

College Counseling • Goal: Admission ‘to the best fit’ school of the student’s top choices, whether public or private. • 100% of our graduates are eligible to enter a 4-year college or university. PCS exceeds UC subject area requirements and all required courses are A-G approved through the UC Regents. • Last year, 88% of Pacific Collegiate graduates enrolled in 4-year colleges or universitiesand12% enrolled in 2-year colleges, including Cabrillo’s Honors Transfer Program. • PCS students are accepted at many colleges based on their academic record, extra-curricular activities, etc. Some favorites are Evergreen, the University of California, Cal Poly, Lewis and Clark. Other competitive colleges our graduates have been admitted to include: Stanford, University of Chicago, Princeton, Reed, Yale, and Harvard.

  20. How Many Hours A Year Is A Family Encouraged To Volunteer At PCS? PCS operates with a minimum staff and spends its funds on academics to the greatest extent possible.  This is why parent participation is encouraged and part of the charter of the school. Parents are asked to make a commitment to participate in a minimum of 40 hours of service work each yearwhile their son or daughter is enrolled at PCS. PCS families volunteer over 14,500hours in a variety of ways.

  21. How Is PCS Funded? • Though it is ‘public’, Pacific Collegiate School – as a charter school – receives a smaller portion of government funds than other area public schools. While government funding provides approximately $6,000 per student, it does not cover the cost of the outstanding education PCS offers to each and every student. • Because we strive towards a higher level of education for all our students, PCS spent approximately $8,000 per student last year.

  22. How Is PCS Funded ? (cont.) • In order to maintain and improve our quality educational program, we ask each family to make a tax deductible donation of $3,000 per student each year to help us achieve this goal. • Naturally, full participation from every family is our goal. We hope each family will contribute what they can. Typically more than 80% of PCS families contribute to our Annual Fund Campaign.

  27. How Are Admissions Determined? Enrollment parameters: • Total enrollment must not exceed 516 • Grade 7 enrollment is targeted at 88 • Maximum Grade Size (for lottery purposes): Grades 8-10 = 88, Grades 11,12 = 82 • If projected enrollment for a particular grade is at maximum on Lottery date, lottery entrants for that grade will all be wait-listed.

Four Admissions Preferences Per the school’s charter, admission to PCS is determined by lottery, after certain admissions preferences are exercised. • Siblings of currently-enrolled students who will also attend PCS next year. • Children of Faculty, Staff and Board Members. • Preference for First-Time College Attendee. • Preference for applicants residing within SCCS Secondary District.

  29. Preference #3 For First-Time College Attendees • We are currently in the third year of a three year ‘pilot lottery preference’ being offered to Grade 7 applicants only. • The preference applies to applicants who would be the first in their family to attend college. It reserves five seats in Grade 7 (or 10% of spaces remaining for Grade 7 after implementation of preferences 1 & 2, whichever number is larger).

Preference #3 For First-Time College Attendees (Cont.) • All eligible applicants for Preference #3 will be selected through a lottery process. • A wait-list of all Preference #3 candidates not selected for Grade 7 through that particular lottery will be compiled, and maintained as necessary. • Any candidate for admission through Preference #3 not selected in that smaller lottery will then be a candidate for the appropriate grade-level lottery and will also be automatically re-classified according to Preference #4…

Preference #4 For Applicants Residing Within SCCS Secondary District • Applies to all who would be eligible to attend Harbor, Santa Cruz, and Soquel High Schools, as well as SCCS alternative options. • In-district applicants are awarded a weighted advantage in the lottery process such that their chances of being selected are greater than those of out-of-district applicants. • This preference addresses a legal duty of PCS and is exercised as part of each grade-level lottery.

  32. How Does The Lottery Work? • All lottery entrants receive a number upon receipt of their online application. This number is the number entered into the lottery on March 21, 2013. • On the night of the lottery, the numbers are submitted for each grade to a website, www.random.org, and placed on a list in the order generated. • Excluding 7th grade, which has a predetermined number of spots open, seats are filled from the list created by the lottery as they open up. In other words, from a wait list. • For the fall semester, seats may be filled until the end of the first quarter in October. In January some students may be admitted to fill vacant seats. Their admission will be based on an appropriate class schedule being available for that student.

  33. What Is The Lottery Timeline? • Applications must be submitted online no later than March 7, 2013. • Submission of the application and attendance at an Information Meeting guarantees entry into the lottery, March 21, 2013. • During the week of March 25th, we will call each family whose student received a seat. All results will be posted by number on the website as of Wednesday, March 27th. • Forms submitted after the lottery will place a student on the waiting list in the order that they are received.
