  2. About Kwakiutl • The Kwakiutl lived along the northwest coast of North America. • They depended on the land and sea for all their needs.

  3. Who are Kwakiutl? • The tribe is a group of Native North Americans who dwell in the N Vancouver Island and the nearby mainland of British Columbia, Canada. • They are part of the Wakashan branch of the Algonquian-Wakashan linguistic tribe. • Kwakiutl culture was typical of the Northwest Coast area (including the custom of Potlatch).

  4. Their Food • The Kwakiutl hunted and fished for food. • Some of their foods were dried salmon, deer meat and whale. • They went out in the open sea and caught whales.

  5. Their Clothes • They used cedar trees for most of their clothes. • They made skirts, shirts and shoes from cedar trees.

  6. Kwakiutl Celebrations • The Potlatch was one of their most famous celebrations. • A Potlatch was held when babies were born and birthdays were celebrated. • They exchanged gifts such as cedar boxes to keep dried fish in and a lot of other things.
