2. David hails from beautiful Melbourne town and wrote the Orc skin tutorial in The Golden D6 Issue Eight. By his own admission, he’s only been painting for a short while but has rapidly developed an awesome painting style. Secret or loud and proud painter/gamer? I’m pretty sure I could be classified as loud and proud painter. I’m not a gamer though, although I have been in the past I focus most of my energy these days on trying to become the best painter that I can become. It’s become more than a hobby to me it is really a life style. I love the complexity of the art involved and it always seems that after everything I paint I learn something and get better. I post pictures on my public Facebook page and I know every one of my friends thinks of me as the biggest nerd they know. But I’m proud to be this way. What age did you get into painting and what started it off? I first got into the wonderful world of Warhammer when I was 13 and 14 years old collecting Bretonnia. I wasn’t able to afford a lot of stuff at that age but I pretty much spent all of my money buying extra metal guys to go with my plastic starter set guys. Eventually it became too nerdy for me to continue because I cared what other people thought at that age and the friend I played with lost interest because it wasn’t cool enough. Then, I once again became interested again at the age of 27 which is 6 years ago now! I came and went a couple of times during that time and bought and sold a lot of stuff. I go into playing Fantasy as Bretonnia again and realised that I could pretty much afford to buy whatever I liked this time around and started buying other armies. I was never really into the 40k universe until someone who doesn’t play or paint was reading the Horus Heresy books and I told them that I read a lot of the Warhammer Fantasy Old World books. He suggested I check out the Horus Heresy because it was really awesome. 3. of the 40k lore now than Fantasy. So during that time I wasn’t really giving myself any time to paint or work on my skills and was just collecting a huge number of models from lots of races and game systems, I built a lot of models but didn’t paint them. Lots of conversions for the sake of conversion and most of them are really un-paintable but I learned a lot about building and converting during this time. Then about two years ago I started to get into it a bit more and roughly 18 months ago I decided that I wanted to become the best painter that I could be and really started to push myself. What was the first model you ever painted? The first model I ever painted was a Bretonnian Bowman, one of the old plastic ones that came with the starter kit. I loved it. On my second coming into the hobby I painted a Reaper barbarian girl. I’ve included a relatively poor iPhone picture of this model below. Humble beginnings? It’s pretty bad haha! What is your favourite miniature or company’s miniature to paint? I’m absolutely a Games Workshop fanboy. I love their plastic miniatures the most and seem to always get my favourite results from them that said my favourite models probably all come from the Forge World Character series set. https://www.warpainter.site The online commission miniature painting database. 4. What is your favourite brush/paint brand? I use almost exclusively Winsor & Newton Series 7 brushes. My favourite brush is in the Miniature range, the no. 5. This is for all detail work, however I use a range of other cheaper brushes from other manufacturers for other types of work because brushes wear out and it is very important that the tip is perfect when you start to get down to the details. Paint brand wise I don’t have a favourite brand. I just use the colours that appeal to me the most, though I must say I’m very happy with the way the Vallejo Model Colour and Model Air paints work at the moment. It’s a pity I only discovered how much I like them recently because I own almost the complete set of P3, Scale 75 and Citadel paints and am only just now building my Model Colour collection. https://www.warpainter.site The online commission miniature painting database. 5. What are you working on right now? I am currently working on the Forgeworld Character series Eidolon model, it’s been a challenge to paint so far there is a lot of small detailed gold filigree which takes very specific care to get right. I haven’t given myself a lot of time to paint lately but I will hopefully finish in the next couple of days. What model would you love to paint that you haven’t done yet? I’ve got a lot of plans for many models. I have a huge collection of stuff that I want to eventually work on. I really need to stop buying new stuff because there’s no way to keep up with everything that I want to paint. But I think the thing I think about the most is the Daemon Prince Magnus the Red model. I’m planning a big Space Wolves vs Magnus and his Thousand Sons Diorama which is going to be awesome when I finally get around to putting it together. I’m also planning on a series of different Diorama’s that will tell parts of the story of the Warhammer Fantasy End Times books. The first one in that lot will probably be a Nurgle invasion of Marienburg diorama which will be the biggest project I have begun when it happens. Where do you get your inspiration from? This is a hard one. I get some inspiration from other artists, I’m constantly browsing work on the internet however I think my main source of inspiration comes from seeing a particularly well done scene in a movie or TV series that inspires me to incorporate a tiny element into an overall idea. This happened for my Zombie surprise model while watching the Walking Dead. Any hobby tips or cheats to share? I have many tips and or tricks but I don’t know if they’re secret and specific to me. I use a wet palette for EVERYTHING, if you’re not using a wet palette then get one ASAP they’re super easy to make and make all of the difference in the world when painting. 6. be using empty tablet sheets as a palette option. Whenever I’m doing messy work I always put a bit of paint or glue in the tablet sheets and never ever apply super glue straight from the tube. What other creative outlets do you use (music, canvas art, etc.)? I am becoming more and more interested in sculpting my own models. This will come eventually as I learn and desire to convert my work more and more. I plan to eventually build my own model from scratch but that’s a ways off in the future. I also sometimes draw and doodle in a sketchbook different ideas. What is your favourite convention or event have you gone to? I don’t go to a lot but it is surely Crystal Dragon because it’s becoming the premier painting comp in Australia (at least it seems that way to me). I really wish Games Workshop still held Golden Demon in Australia because that would be it for sure. I’m planning on heading to Europe to go to Warhammer World and a Golden Demon comp at some point in the future.
