  3. Products • AMESD Fire products: • The AMESD fire service is aimed at fire managers in SADC to help with the management of fires in the region. The service will consist of three main parts looking at the: • Prediction of fires • Detection/Monitoring of fires • Assessment of fires

Advanced Settings • Fire Danger filter: • A sliding scale on the main active fire viewer will allow users to specify if they want to see all fires in their country or only fires above a certain fire danger level. • Area of Interest onscreen alerting: • The AOI onscreen alerting will allow users to import a kml polygon (define and created in Google Earth) in to the AFIS Field terminal software. The polygon will be displayed onscreen and will alert the user of any fires detected in the AOI.

Effective utilisation of fire information • Prediction of fires • Study the Lowveld and FWI forecast every morning to identify dangerous conditions • Email/fax the latest map and table to regional fire managers across the country • Issue special warnings to areas with Very high and Extreme fire conditions • Utilise 3 day forecasts on Fridays to identify dangerous fire conditions over weekends when resources are limited

Effective utilisation of fire information • Detection of fires • Monitor the screen for new fire events, especially around 10am and 3pm • Once detected, click on fire event and evaluate the fire conditions • When a problem fire is identified, zoom in and save map • Email/fax map to regional fire manager • Continue to monitor the fire event

  16. Burned area reporting • Assessment of fires • Monitor monthly BA estimates for your country • Import BA product in Geonetcast toolbox and create provincial BA estimates as well as BA per landcover type • Create monthly BA maps per province
