3. Communication Defined • Definition: Process of transmitting a message from a sender to a receiver

4. Effective vs. Ineffective • Effective Communication: Clear, concise, consistent, creative, sensitive, persuasive, open • Ineffective Communication: Mumbled, inconsistent, scattered thoughts, threatening, withdrawing, lecturing, criticizing, interference • Interference: Anything that distorts or interrupts a message • Noise: an unwanted sound that interferes or distracts is a barrier to learning and communicating • External Noise: Comes from environment around you • Internal Noise: Comes from within sender/receiver’s mind

5. Channels • Definition: The method by which the message travels from sender to receiver • Direct: face to face • Indirect: news, texting, TV, etc. • Social: sharing communication with peers, friends, family • Advocate/Expert: seeking advice, lecture, professional

7. 8. Verbal I-Messages • I-messages: Statements of fact about how an individual thinks or feels • How you feel, when you feel it, why you feel it • Ex) I feelsadwhenyou call me names because it hurts my feelings. • You-Messages: Statements that often assign blame or judge others • Ex) You are a horrible friend because you call me mean names.

9. Communication and Gender How many words a day do females say on average? Males? • Girls: 25,000 words a day! • Guys: 10,000 words per day! • In reality, females have more of an innate quality to express themselves verbally than males.

10. Catch on to me yet…I hope!? • On the side of your notes somewhere, or on the back of a page, write down how you knew what my directions were and what I was trying to say…even though I haven’t spoke yet today.

11. Non-Verbal Communication • Artifacts/Items • Proxemics (how near or far) • Body Language • Arms crossed, leaning in, eye contact • Physical Characteristics • Hair, cleanliness, • Clothing and Make-up • Touching Behavior • Hugging, shoulder taps, hand shakes

Distance Zones (Unspoken Boundaries) • Public (12 feet) • Social (4-12 feet) • Personal (1.5-4 feet) • Intimate (< 1.5 feet) • Do you know of anyone that when they talk to you, they are more close than you are comfortable with? • Why do you think after a certain distance is closed in, we begin to feel uncomfortable?

Written Communication • It is so important to express yourself clearly in writing; this is one of the communication channels we tend to misinterpret the most. • Writing emails, texting, essays, notes, etc. • Formal and Informal • School essay vs. texting or Facebook • What is the difference? • What is the biggest determining factor for informal vs. formal? Your AUDIENCE!

15. Written Communication • After reading a book, why do you think some of us like the movie, and some of us don’t? • We all can interpret written language differently • The way writing makes us feel, especially as a story, can have a strong impact on us.
