Rounding Rules • Look at the digit to the RIGHT of the place value being rounded • The digit being rounded remains the same if the digit to the RIGHT of it is 0, 1, 2, 3, or 4 (stays on the floor) • The digit being rounded goes up to the next highest value by one if the digit to the right of it is 5, 6, 7, 8, or 9 (climbs the vine) • After rounding, all the digits after the digit rounded are dropped.

  5. Examples • Round to the ones place: 18.44 • Eight is in the ones place. The digit to the RIGHT of 8 is four. “1, 2, 3, 4 stay on the floor” (stay the same), so the 8 stays the same. • The number rounds to 18 and the digits after the 8 are dropped. • Round to the hundredths place: 42.768321940248 • Six is in the hundredths place. The digit to the RIGHT of it is 8. “5, 6, 7, 8, 9 climb the vine” (round up one), so the 6 rounds up to 7. • The number rounds to 42.77 and the digits after the 6 (now 7) are dropped.
