  2. Objectives At the end of this lesson the student will do 3 things: • state when a corner kick should be awarded • state what constitutes a properly taken corner kick • state when the corner kick is in play

  3. DEFINITION A corner kick is awarded when the whole ball has: • Crossed the goal line in the air or on the ground • Was last touched by a defender • A goal was not scored

  4. WHERE The corner kick is taken from the quarter-circle at the nearest corner to where the ball crossed the goal line. Corner flagpost shall not be removed or moved from a vertical position

  5. Correct positioning Incorrect position Correct positioning PLACEMENT The ball shall be placed inside the corner arc. Requirement is met if any part of the ball breaks the plane of the corner arc.

  6. ENCROACHMENT Opponents shall retire 10 yards away from the arc ! 10 yards 10 yards

  7. ADDITIONAL POINTS • Kicker may not “double touch” the ball • A goal may be scored directly from a corner kick • May not declare a player offside who receives the ball directly from a corner kick

  8. DANGERS Corner kicks are a potentially dangerous situation! • Before ball is in play: • Pushing and jostling for position • Hold up kick and warn or Caution • After ball is in play: • All fouls per Law 12 • Penalize per Law 12

REVIEW • When is a corner kick awarded? • After whole ball crosses goal line last touched by a defending player • Who can take the corner kick? • Any attacking player may take the kick • Where is the ball placed on a corner kick? • Anywhere inside the corner arc on the side of the field that it went over the goal line.

  14. REVIEW (cont) • When is the ball in play? • When the ball is kicked and moves • What happens if the ball is kicked over the goal line before leaving the corner arc? • Goal kick for opponents • Where are opponents required to be? • At least 10 yards from the corner arc

  15. REVIEW (cont) • Can a goal be scored directly on opponents? • Yes • Can a player be declared offside if s/he receives the ball directly from the corner kick? • No, if they receive the ball directly from the corner kick.

  16. REVIEW (cont) • Can the kicker play the ball again? • Not before it touches another player. • IFK at spot of second touch. • May a player step on the ball to put it in play? • No, it must be a kicking motion and the ball must move
