  1. Possible application for a ERC synergy grant • https://erc.europa.eu/news/information-synergy-grants-2018-erc-scientific-council • Hans et al are aiming to bring together ~4 PIs to make the application. Ideally, as part of broad base, 1 PI would be an accelerator physicist from CERN. • If successful, the PI would have to anticipate dedicating about 30% of their time for the duration of the project. Hans argues that value of the grant could be used to help offset the manpower required. • This means: we have to • 1) identify the subject: Technical Design Report for CPEDM (?) • 2) argue about the interdisciplinarity: HEP and ACCELERATOR (engineering) • 3) identify the 2-4 PI´s <-- means that, e.g., CERN has to name the person now! • 4) agree on the host institution • 5) name a writing team

  2. Circumference • We should slightly adapt the circumference of the EDM ring to simplify synchronization. Possible options with "simple" circumference ratios would be (the LEIR circumference is CLEIR = 25*Pi m = 78.5398 m): • CEDM = 6*CLEIR = 471.239 m, • CEDM = 7*CLEIR = 549.779 • CEDM = (13/2)*CLEIR = 510.509 m, • CEDM = (19/3)*CLEIR = 497.419 m ...... • To get a clearer picture on implications, the details of the transfer have to be discussed (number of LEIR to EDM ring transfers, harmonic numbers in the two machines, rise time of EDM ring injection "kicker"). The first option with CEDM = 6*CLEIR would obviously be the simplest one provided it is compatible with maximum electric fields. Christian Carli

  3. Cryo • Motivation to cool the whole CSR (Heidelberg) to cryogenic temperatures: • I discussed with Manfred Grieser and asked him. The aim of this machine is to do experiments with charged molecules, which should have very low temperatures (no rotational and/or vibrational states excited) as, for example, the cross section for interactions with electron from a cooler depend on the state. This achieved by storing the molecules in a fully cryogenic ring. Christian Carli

  4. To be discussed: rise and fall times of the fast deflectors. If we keep a deflection of 10mrad and with a horizontal angular spread of the beam of only (3.2 um/40 m)^1/2 = 0.28 um, it is probably not sufficient to consider 1% to 99% rise times, but rather 0.5% to 99.5% or 2‰ to 998‰. • The rise times depend a lot on the details of the transfer. If only two bunches are injected per sense of rotation into a machine with a circumference of 6 times the LEIR one, the fast deflector can be relatively slow (say with rise and fall times of 1us as in ELENA). Christian Carli

  5. Longitudinal polarization out of source Flip to vertical with solenoid and steerers – see BNL Polarimetry at various stages Courtesy Ed Stephenson

  6. Vertical injection into EDM ring • Bending magnet connects to both CW and CCW injection on separate fills. • Beams must be in tight bunches, or else the rotation into the horizontal plane will leave behind residual parts of the beam with unacceptably large normal components. Harmonic = 2. • RF solenoid runs at beam revolution frequency and is matched so that peak of oscillating field matches time of bunch crossing through solenoid. • Two bunches for each beam will have opposite polarization. Then each must be split to get higher harmonic for experiment with mixing with opposite polarization. Courtesy Ed Stephenson

  7. Baseline • 2x1010ppb CW and 2x1010 ppb CCW (1 or 2 bunches per beam) • Injection of vertically polarized beam • The beams will be allowed to debunchand then re-bunch at the required frequency using a high-harmonic (h = 100 in this case) RF system. • Using an RF solenoid, the spins of the protons will be rotated in the longitudinal direction, producing protons of both positive and negative helicities.

  8. Ring • Ed arguing for CW/CCW and longitudinal polarization in opposite direction • Spin along momentum vector maintained by RF feedback • Delta fRF – move beam off magic momentum, spin precesses, check polarization, back to magic • Machine cycle sketched

  9. Civil engineering • - Size of the tunnel (it is fine for the moment ) similar to the existing • - Connection to the new ring. In two directions and with a certain radius to be confirmed • - There will be some new buildings and entrance points to the ring • - Probably a beam dump • - No special requirements for RP, cover with ground or concrete, distances, etc. • Raul FERNANDEZ ORTEGA
