  1. Equivalent Fractions FractionsWelcome to the fractions tutorial. Finding Fractions of shapes? Click on a star to begin learning. Finding fractions of numbers Mixed and Improper Fractions

  2. What are Fractions? A fraction is a part of a whole. You can find fractions of shapes by finding out how much of the shape is shaded. E.g. 1of the square is red 2 Back to tutorial homepage

  3. Finding Fractions of shapes You can work out what fraction is shaded by working out the numerator and denominator. 1 of the square is red 2 The denominator tells you how many parts there are altogether The bottom number is called the denominator The numerator tells you how many parts are shaded in a particular colour The top number of the fraction is called the numerator

  4. Finding Fractions of Shapes What fraction of this rectangle is blue? This rectangle has three equal parts, so the denominator is 3. Two parts of the rectangle are blue so the numerator is 2 2 3

  5. Finding Fractions of Shapes What fraction of this rectangle is red? This rectangle has six equal parts, so the denominator is 6. Four parts of the rectangle are red so the numerator is 4 4 6

  6. Finding Fractions of Shapes What fraction of this rectangle is green? This rectangle has twelve equal parts, so the denominator is 12. 5 parts of the rectangle are green so the numerator is 5 5 12 3 12 What fraction of this rectangle is blue? Click here to find the answer

  7. Finding Fractions of Shapes Now have a go at finding what fraction of these shapes are shaded blue. 1. Please write your answers in your secret agent handbook then show your contact. 4. 2. 3.

  8. Equivalent Fractions When fractions are equal to each other they are called equivalent fractions. For example 1 = 2 2 4

  9. Equivalent Fractions These rectangles have the same amount of red shaded 1 of this top rectangle 3 is red. 1 3 So this means that 1 = 2 3 6 In the second rectangle 2 is red 6 2 6

  10. Equivalent Fractions Now have a go at finding some equivalent fractions, use the pictures to help you Please write your answers in your secret agent handbook then show your contact. = =

  11. Improper Fractions and Mixed Numbers So improper fractions have a numerator that is always bigger than the denominator 5 2 When a fraction is greater than 1 whole one it is called an improper fraction. Numerator Denominator An improper fraction

  12. Improper Fractions and Mixed Numbers An improper fraction can also be written as a mixed number A mixed number is when an improper fraction is described in whole numbers and parts left over. Have a look at how 5 halves is the same as 2½ 5 2 2 1 2 = = 2 whole ones and a half An improper fraction 5 halves

  13. Improper Fractions and Mixed Numbers Now have a look at another example of changing an improper fraction into a mixed number 7 4 1 3 4 = = 1 whole 3 quarters An improper fraction 7 quarters

  14. Improper Fractions and Mixed Numbers Now have a go at changing these improper fractions into mixed numbers, please record your workings in your secret agent handbook. 4. 7 2 = 3 1 2 • 9 • 2 = 4 1 2 Click when you are ready for the answers 2. 5 4 = 1 1 4 5. 8 4 = 2 3. 5 3 = 1 2 3

  15. Finding Fractions of Numbers Find 1 of 12 3 = 4 You can also use pictures or objects to help you. Have a look at this example. You can find fractions of numbers by using division Each group has 4 counters so 1 3 of 12 is 4. Start with 12 counters and divide them into 3 equal groups.

  16. Finding Fractions of Numbers Find 2 of 10 5 = 4 But the question is asking us to find 2 fifths of 10. So 2 groups of counters is 4. This time the denominator is 5, so we will divide the 10 counters into 5 groups Each group has 2 counters in it, so 1 of 10 is 2. 5 Lets have a go at another one!

  17. Finding Fractions of Numbers Now have a go at finding the fractions of these numbers, you can use pictures or counters to help you. Please record your workings in your secret agent handbook. = 9 4. Find 3 of 20 4 = 15 • Find 1 of 18 • 2 Click when you are ready for the answers 2. Find 1 of 16 4 = 4 5. Find 3 of 18 6 = 9 3. Find 2 of 12 3 = 8

  18. Congratulations Agent! Now you know all about fractions – good luck in your mission!
