  2. Definition • When do you define? OR • Why do you define? • B4 you attempt to define anything, ask yourself the purpose it will serve • You define for 2 reasons: • When it is necessary: key/technical term • When it is disputed (challenging assumptions)

Definition • How do you define key words? • Providing synonyms • Citing a dictionary definition • Stipulating a definition • A combination of 2 or more of these • NB: a dictionary definition is not the best, unless it complements any of the others • strategies for defining key terms: • Aristotelian definition (classification and differentiation) • Operational definition (measurable/scientific)

Definition • Strategies for defining contested terms: • Stipulative definition: using critical thinking to create your own definition • Reportative: 3 approaches – • establishing a definition based on what others have said (standard/specialised definition, judicial opinion, expert testimony, constitution, etc.) • Adopting an original intention strategy: normally followed by a stipulative definition/reportative definition (the original intention of Prophet Mohamed in saying this…) • The earlier meaning strategy: etymological source (Oxford English Dictionary)

  5. Assignment • Develop a definitional essay of about 2 pages one of the following topics: • Police brutality • Child abuse • Sexual harassment
