  3. Brief History/News Antigua, a constitutional momarchy, was named after the church of Santa Maria de la Antigua in Seville. Antigua was colonized by Britain in 1632. It gained full independence in 1981. The twin islands are currently undergoing a project to build a avocado processing factory to strengthen agroprocessing & create jobs.
