  1. Face Up To Hunger: Lent 2010 CSPE/Citizenship Resource

  2. Face up to Hunger….Citizenship and CSPE Post Primary Teachers’ Resource. For the first time in history, one in six of the world’s population, in other words approximately 1 billion people, are going hungry. The global financial crisis has added a further 46 million people to those living on less than $1 per day. Trócaire’s Lenten campaign this year, focuses on the root causes of hunger and poverty, how it affects people and in particular focuses on those living in Rwanda and the developing world. The three case studies contained in this power point focus on Rwanda. They are designed to be used as stimulus material to encourage the use of critical thinking, discussion, debate and analysis skills. The resource has been specifically designed for students and teachers of Citizenship and CSPE, looking at the concepts of development, rights and responsibilities, human dignity and interdependence. We strongly recommend that this resource be used in conjunction with the Post Primary Education and Action Pack, ‘Food for Thought, Food for Life’ produced for Lent 2010. There are notes added under each of the slides which will give some additional background information.

  3. Rwanda Fact File • Size: Rwanda is one of the smallest countries in Africa and is approximately the same size as Munster. • Population: 10.4 million. • Capital:Kigali. • Ethnic groups: Hutu 84%, Tutsi 15%, Twa 1%. • Languages: Kinyarwanda, French and English. • Life expectancy: 51 years. • School enrolment: Primary: 86% and Secondary: 6%. • GDP per capita: 500,000 Rwandan Francs (approx. €630/£560) • Poverty ranking: 161st poorest country in the world.

  4. Did you know?? • For the first time in history one in six of the world’s population goes hungry, in other words 1 billion people. • Approximately 5 million children die because of hunger every year. • One child dies every 6 seconds from malnutrition and related causes. • Malnutrition and hunger-related diseases cause 60% of children’s deaths in the developing world. • We have promised, according to Millennium Development Goal 1, to halve hunger by 2015. • The Irish government has appointed a Hunger Envoy who will report in October 2010.

  5. Case Study- Triphonie Domitille is the young girl pictured on the front of this year’s Lenten Trócaire box. Here she is pictured with her mother Triphonie.

  6. Triphonie said ‘Now I can weave and am learning how I can make other improvements through small loans. The social aspect of coming together with others is very important. We learn to become self-reliant and about how to start a business. Now I can help my family, buying food, medicine and clothes’.

  7. Case Study- Speciose Speciose is 33 years old and is President of COFAVU run by COCOF, a Trócaire supported cooperative of women from rural households. COFAVU supports women in setting up their own small businesses.

  8. Speciose concluded ‘now our socio economic situation is changing slowly. With support from COCOF we are improving our lives and trying to cope with life. We are sending our kids to school’. (L-R) Speciose with daughter Tatiana (8), sons Florien (8) and Clement (12) and husband Thacien.

  9. Case study- Josienne For the 2004 Lenten campaign, Trócaire focused on the genocide in Rwanda. Josienne was the young girl who featured on the box that year. She was 13 years old.

  10. Josienne is now 17 years old. Josienne with her mother, Genevieve.

  11. How to use case studies: Case Studies are an ideal medium for looking at an issue from a personal and human perspective. • Have any of the students read an article, seen a film or have any previous exposure to Rwanda or the genocide? Ask them to describe what they saw or read. Is there any similarity with the case studies and what they saw or read previously? • Encourage students to imagine they are Domitille, Triphonie’s daughter. Ask them to write a personal account of what it is like for their family to live on less than €1.07/ 93p per day. What did they eat? What happens if you are sick? How did they feel? The account doesn’t have to be completely accurate but will encourage the students to look at the issue from another perspective. • Josienne and Emmanuel both hope to get a good job when they finish their education. How do you think education will help Rwandans to develop their country? • Apart from hunger, what other problems or issues did Triphonie have to deal with? • Ask the students to imagine that they are journalists for the Irish Times. They have been asked to write an article about living on less than €1.07/ 93p per day. What would they write? • Take a look at the ‘Hunger Wheel’ below. All of the factors mentioned can lead to hunger in developing countries. Divide the class into groups of 4 or 5. Give each group one factor which contributes to hunger. Use the information on the back of the photo’s in the photo pack and the list of websites provided in the accompanying notes to get them started. Ask each group to compile some research on their factor: What does it mean? Why is this causing hunger? What are the effects it may have on families in Rwanda? What are the solutions?
