  2. Overview – Kids Read!! Goal To develop the English language skills of the future generation through encouraging reading both in the classroom and at home for students in local government schools in 13 of the MENA countries, for a one year pilot period with a possible extension up to three years

  3. Overview – facts & figures • 13 countries • 6 primary schools per country • 78 schools; 25,000 students; 300 teachers • 250 HSBC volunteers

  5. Books – overview • Approximately 50 books per school • UK storybooks • Used in EL classes & self-access resource • Complement syllabus • Mirror HSBC areas of work • e.g. environment

  6. Books – types of books We are aiming for three categories of books • Storytelling books for grades 1 - 2 • Class set of books for grades 3 – 6 • Self-access books for grades 3 – 6

  7. Books – selection process • Commissioned team select 200 titles • MoE, HSBC and BC to select from 200 • Censorship • Materials writing team to select final 50 titles

  8. Training - overview • 3 – 4 teachers/supervisors to be trained • Minimum of 9 workshops available • BC to deliver training directly to teachers • HSBC volunteers will also receive training • Workshops to be recorded for self-access purposes

Training – proposed workshops • Information session about Kids Read • Storytelling workshop – input • Storytelling workshop – practical application/micro-teaching • Strategies for Reading • Assessing Reading • Read and do – how to exploit the materials/book • Dictionary skills • Storytelling skills workshop for students • Mapping/Aligning books to the curriculum

  10. Launch • One high profile event; 5 smaller events • Hosted by participating school • Invited guest speaker • Teacher training to be incorporated

  11. Community Events Four events throughout the year • UN Child Day – 20th November • One before end of February • World Book Day – 24th April • One before end June

  16. Role of Ministry of Education • Nominate participating schools • Censor books • Permit teachers to attend training • Access to school curriculum • Encourage schools to host events • Presence at events • Access to statistical & evaluative data
