  1. #12 Stages of Life • The human life cycle into eight stages of development. • Many aspects of social growth are defined by developmental tasks. • Each person follows his or her own rate of development. • Erik Erikson’s stages of physical, mental/emotional, and social growth through teen years.

  2. 8 Stages of Life • Infancy • Early Childhood • Middle Childhood • Late Childhood • Adolescence-puberty • Young Adulthood • Middle Adulthood • Mature and Old age

  3. Infancy • Birth to 1 year • Characteristic of stage: child is completely dependent on others to meet his or her needs • Child begin to move around and to explore the world • Development task: to develop trust

  4. Early Childhood • (1 to 3 years) • Characteristic of stage: child is learning to separate from parents • Child begins to learn to walk and run, and to climb. Also children start doing things for themselves and to communicate with others. • Development task: to develop ability to do tasks oneself

  5. Middle Childhood • 3 to 5 years • Characteristic of stage: child begin to make decisions and to think of and carry out projects • Children can jump and hop and draw simple shapes. Also they pretend play helps them develop social skills and practice future roles • Development task: to develop initiate –ability to create one’s own play

  6. Late Childhood • 5 to 11 years • Characteristic of stage: child explores surroundings and masters more and more difficult skills • Friends are important in building social skills and self-esteem. • Development task: to develop interest in performing activities

  7. Adolescence(puberty) • 12 to 18 years Characteristic of stage: adolescent searches for his or her own identityBecome independent of parents • Define your values • Find your identity • Accept your body • Form mature relationships • Development task: to develop one’s own identity- a sense of who one is

  8. Young adulthood • 19 to 30 years • Characteristic of stage: person tries to develop close personal relationships • Development task: to develop intimacy- forming a strong relationship with another person.

  9. Middle Adulthood 31 To 60 years • Characteristic of stage: person tries to achieve something in work and is concerned with the wellbeing of others. • Development task: to develop the sense of having contributed to society.

  10. Maturity and Old age • 61 years to death • Characteristic of stage: person tries to understand meaning of own life • Development task: to develop integrity –feeling satisfied with one’s life
