  1. WORSHIPGod Is SpiritJohn 4:21-26

  2. John 4:21-26 21Jesus said to her, "Woman, believe me, the hour is coming when neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father. 22 You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for salvation is from the Jews. 23But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him. 24God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth." 25The woman said to him, "I know that Messiah is coming (he who is called Christ). When he comes, he will tell us all things." 26Jesus said to her, "I who speak to you am he."

  3. 1. Worship at a designated place will be obsolete (4:21) Obsolete – no longer in use 21 Jesus said to her, “Woman, believe me, the hour is coming when neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father. The word “hour” in John’s gospel refers to the crucifixion, burial and resurrection.

  4. 1. Worship at a designated place will be obsolete (4:21) > Jesus is the temple. John 2:18-22So the Jews said to him, “What sign do you show us for doing these things?” Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.” The Jews then said, “It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and will you raise it up in three days?” But he was speaking about the temple of his body. When therefore he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this, and they believed the Scripture and the word that Jesus had spoken.

  5. 1. Worship at a designated place will be obsolete (4:21) > Jesus is the temple. > Christ is the temple where God and man can meet

  6. 1. Worship at a designated place will be obsolete (4:21) The implications are staggering: - How and whom you worship is vastly more important than where you worship. - There is absolutely nothing about our worship of God that isn’t defined or affected by Jesus Christ

  7. 2. Worship is governed by God’s Word (4:22) God sets the rules, God makes the way. 22 You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for salvation is from the Jews.

  8. 2. Worship is governed by God’s Word (4:22) Samaritans– worship what they do not know God is unknown to them. They stand outside the mainstream of God’s revelation. Therefore their worship cannot be characterized by truth and knowledge.

  9. 2. Worship is governed by God’s Word (4:22) Jews– worship what they know – God was known to them. They were standing in the stream of God’s saving revelation. “salvation is from the Jews.” They are the historical matrix out of which that revelation emerges. Rom 3:2 Much in every way. To begin with, the Jews were entrusted with the oracles of God.

  10. 2. Worship is governed by God’s Word (4:22) - God’s Word governs worship Our worship should be governed by His word and energized by His Spirit.

  11. 2. Worship is governed by God’s Word (4:22) - God’s Word governs worship The acceptable way of worshiping the true God is instituted by himself, and so limited by his own revealed will, that he may not be worshiped according to the imaginations and devices of men, or the suggestions of Satan, under any visible representation, or any other way not prescribed in the holy Scripture. Westminster Confession of Faith

  12. 2. Worship is governed by God’s Word (4:22) - What are the elements practiced by the church in the New Testament? Acts 2:42 And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers.

  13. 2. Worship is governed by God’s Word (4:22) - What are the elements practiced by the church in the New Testament? - Singing (Eph 5;19-20; Col 3:16 - Prayer (1 Tim 2:1-2) - Reading Scripture (1 Tim 4:13) - Preaching/teaching (1 Tim 5:17; 2 Tim 2:2; 3:16; 4:2; Titus 1:9) - Lord’s Supper and Baptism (1 Cor 11:17-34) - Offering (1 Cor 9:3-12; 16:1-2) - Fellowship (Heb 10:24-25)

  14. 2. Worship is governed by God’s Word (4:22) - How do you gage what is appropriate in worship? Colossians 3:16-17 16Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. 17And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

  15. 3. True worshipers will worship God in spirit and truth (4:23) 23 But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him.

  16. 3. True worshipers will worship God in spirit and truth (4:23) True worship of God does not require that one be present either in Jerusalem or Samaria (v. 21). True worship of God has to do not with physical location but one’s inner spiritual condition (vv. 23-24).

  17. 3. True worshipers will worship God in spirit and truth (4:23) “hour” - When his death, burial, and resurrection takes place there will be true worshipers who will worship the Father in spirit and truth. “is now here” – this period of true worship is already present in the person and ministry of Jesus before the cross. “true worshipers” – real and genuine – defined as being “in spirit and truth”. “spirit and truth” – One preposition “in” governs both nouns which means that are not two separable characteristics.

  18. 3. True worshipers will worship God in spirit and truth (4:23) What is needed for us to worship in spirit and truth: > Regeneration of the Spirit of God, so we can worship in spirit. > Revelation of the Son of God, so that we can worship in truth.

  19. 3. True worshipers will worship God in spirit and truth (4:23) >Regeneration of the Spirit of God, so we can worship in spirit. - Only God’s children worship Him. John 1:12-13But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.

  20. 3. True worshipers will worship God in spirit and truth (4:23) >Regeneration of the Spirit of God, so we can worship in spirit. - Only God’s children worship Him. Rom 8:15-16For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!” The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God,

  21. 3. True worshipers will worship God in spirit and truth (4:23) >Regeneration of the Spirit of God, so we can worship in spirit. - Only God’s children worship Him. - There is an inability to commune with God. Eph 2:1 And you were dead in the trespasses and sins

  22. 3. True worshipers will worship God in spirit and truth (4:23) >Regeneration of the Spirit of God, so we can worship in spirit. - Only God’s children worship Him. - There is an inability to commune with God. - Natural person is one who is unregenerate.

  23. 3. True worshipers will worship God in spirit and truth (4:23) >Regeneration of the Spirit of God, so we can worship in spirit. 1 Cor 2:12-14 Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might understand the things freely given us by God. And we impart this in words not taught by human wisdom but taught by the Spirit, interpreting spiritual truths to those who are spiritual. The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned.

  24. 3. True worshipers will worship God in spirit and truth (4:23) >Regeneration of the Spirit of God, so we can worship in spirit. - Only God’s children worship Him. - There is an inability to commune with God. - Natural person is one who is unregenerate. - The Father creates true worshippers through the Spirit. It is an instantaneous event.

  25. 3. True worshipers will worship God in spirit and truth (4:23) John 3:3-8Jesus answered him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.” 4 Nicodemus said to him, “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born?” 5 Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. 6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. 7 Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’ 8 The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.” - The solution to this spiritual deadness and inability to respond only comes when God gives us new life within. Eph 2:4-5 4 But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, 5 even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved— Col 2:13 And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcission of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, - It is the Holy Spirit, who regenerates us, brings new life, and confirms us in the truth. > Revelation of the Son of God, so that we can worship in truth. - Spirit of truth Jn 14:17 even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you. Jn 15:26-27 “But when the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, he will bear witness about me. 27 And you also will bear witness, because you have been with me from the beginning. John 16:13 When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. - The point is that true worshipers cannot be identified by their attachment to a particular place, but by their worship of God in spirit and truth. To worship God “in spirit and in truth” is first and foremost a way of saying that we must worship God by means of Christ. In him the reality has dawned and the shadows are being swept away (Hebrews 8:13). Christian worship is new-covenant worship; it is gospel-inspired worship; it is Christ-centered worship; it is cross-focused worship. D. A. Carson, Worship By The Book - Recognition of the true identity of Jesus (4:25-26, 42) and allegiance to him will make you a true worshiper. Christ is the place were God is to be acknowledged and honored. John 5:22-23 22 The Father judges no one, but has given all judgment to the Son, 23 that all may honor the Son, just as they honor the Father. Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent him.

  26. 3. True worshipers will worship God in spirit and truth (4:23) >Regeneration of the Spirit of God, so we can worship in spirit. - The solution to this spiritual deadness and inability to respond only comes when God gives us new life within. Eph 2:4-5But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved

Col 2:13 And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcission of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses,

You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you. Jn15:26-27 “But when the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, he will bear witness about me. 27 And you also will bear witness, because you have been with me from the beginning.

  35. 4. God is spirit, we must worship him in spirit and truth (v. 24) 24 God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.” “God is spirit” is an explication and grounding for the truth that those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth. Means He is invisible, divine, life giving and unknown to human beings unless he chooses to reveal Himself.

  36. 4. God is spirit, we must worship him in spirit and truth (v. 24) “God’s spirituality means that God exists as a being that is not made of any matter, has not parts or dimensions, is unable to be perceived by our bodily senses, and is more excellent that any other kind of existence.” Wayne Grudem, Bible Doctrine – Essential Teachings of the Christian Faith Since God is spirit, a man can only rightfully worship in a way that corresponds to God’s nature. Of course, a person cannot commune with God if his spirit has not been regenerated by God’s Spirit. Unless one is born from above, it doesn’t matter where one worships, for no worship is ever done. But if you are born again, you can worship God anywhere! Philip W. Comfort and Wendell C. Hawley, Opening the Gospel of John
