  2. 2010 - International Year of Biodiversity • Global Target: Reducing the rate of loss of biodiversity by 2010 • Global Biodiversity Outlook • Pan European target: Halt the loss of biodiversity by 2010 • EEA Biodiversity Assessment • Progress in some areas but still the decline in biodiversity continues • What has been achieved overall?

CBD COP 10, Nagoya, Japan • “Biodiversity Summit” • Adoption of an International Protocol on Access to Genetic Resources and Benefit-Sharing • Assessment on the achievement of the 2010 target • Adoption of a new strategic plan with internationally agreed goals and targets and a multiyear programme of work for the Convention • Cooperation with other Conventions, organizations and initiatives • Substantive issues: forest biodiversity, marine and coastal biodiversity, biodiversity and climate change, biofuels and Article 8j on traditional knowledge
