  4. Expansion of Ottoman Empire • To stop the invasion, a coalition, another Holy League was formed, composed of Austria and Poland (notably in the Battle of Vienna), Venetians and the Russian Empire. • After winning the Battle of Vienna, the Holy League gained upper hand, and conducted the reconquest of Hungary (Buda and Pest, the former under the command of a Swiss-born convert to Islam, was retaken in 1686 - followed by a mass slaughter reminiscent of the Crusaders' taking of Jerusalem). This war ended with the Treaty of Karlowitz in 1699.

  5. "In the 18th century interest in the Orient reached its high point at the European Courts. • Since ancient times the Orient has been the supplier of consumer luxury goods. Europe imported luxury spices and fragrances from the Orient, items, some of which in the Occident were weighed against gold, and in the 17th century learnt because of the Turks to appreciate the joy of coffee, tea and tobacco.... • The fairytales of " One Thousand and One Nights" affected a society which was craving for exotic goods and impressions.

  6. The repertory of items and figures of the splendid and imaginary Orient offered a society, which measured the ranks of its members by their ability to display splendor and prestige, gratifying means and ideas for self-production and distinction. " taken from Roswitha Gost " Der Harem/ The Harem ", Dumont 1994, page 26 • It trivialized the world of the Islamic Orient into a fairytale scene according to one's own wishful thinking also it served as a psychological condition to play down the potential of their enemy. This society was not interested in an actual discussion. • http://www.museumonline.at/1999/schools/classic/istanbul/allaturka_e.htm
