  3. Biography • English Scientist, Astronomer, & Mathematician • 1642- b. Lincolnshire, England, Dec 25. • 1667 - Graduated from Trinity College • 1669 - Professor of Mathematics at Cambridge • 1689 - Member of Parliament for Cambridge • 1705 - Knighted by Queen Anne • 1727 - d. Mar. 31, buried at Westminster Abbey

  4. Accomplishments • very religious man • discovered the secrets of light and color • Calculus • Law of Universal Gravitation • Three Laws of Motion

  5. First Law An object at rest tends to stay at rest and an object in motion tends to stay in motion with the same speed and in the same direction unless acted upon by an unbalanced force.

  6. Second Law Newtons Second Law states that the acceleration of an object is dependent upon two variables - the net force acting upon the object and the mass of the object

  7. Third Law For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction

  8. Light and Color • explained why objects appeared to be colored • sunlight is a mixture of all colors • prism showed rainbow of colors • green sweater is not always green

  9. Calculus • foundation for differential and integral calculus • German mathematician, Gottfried Leibniz

  10. Gravitation • MYTH - Apple falling from a tree • derived laws to describe how the force of gravity acted • 1687 - Principia or The Mathematical Principles of Natural Philosophy • Principia - Greatest Scientific book ever written
