  2. Overview • Biomaterials - opportunities • The Council • Commercialization Fund • Research Interests

  3. Biomaterials – the opportunities FEEDSTOCK STARCH VEGETABLE OIL CELLULOSE & HEMI-CELLULOSE LIGNIN FIBRE BASIC MATERIALS RESINS FOAMS COMPOSITES

  4. Biomaterials - opportunities Forecasted Market $50 billion (USD) by 2015 Forecasted consumption 4 million ton by 2010 At present Europe represents 40% of global bioplastics consumption Source: Norocon Innovation Consulting Kaeb, Denmark. The Bioplastics Industry in Europe Source: Biopolymers from crops: Proceedings of the Australian Agronomy Conference

  5. Soy polyol • Functionalized soybean oil used in reaction with isocyanate to form urethane linkage • There is approx. 30 lbs of foam in a vehicle • Flexible Foam • Seat Cushion • Seat Back • Headrest • Armrest • Headliner • Rigid • Package Tray • Bumper fascia

  6. Soy polyol pricing Source: OmniTech International

  7. Other Resins (examples) • Poly-Lactic Acid (PLA) • Thermoplastic starch • PHA/PHB • Green polyethylene & polypropylene

  8. Natural Fibres – automotive opportunities • 27 components • 43 kg bio-parts: • door & pillar inners, • head liner, • rear cargo shelf & trunk components, • thermal insulation & isolation mats Mercedes S-class

  9. What is Ontario BioAuto Council? Durable goods Chemicals and plastics processing sectors Renewable resources Automotive sector

  10. Board of Directors: Chrysler Canada Automobile Parts Manufacturers Association Magna-Decoma Woodbridge Group Canadian General Tower Husky Injection Molding Systems AUTO21 Network Centres of Excellence Ontario Centres of Excellence Hybrid Chemistry Council Tembec PSA Composites Industry Canada (non-voting) Ontario Agri-Food Technologies Members: Ford Canada DuPont Canada Canadian Plastics Industry Association Ontario Soybean Growers Innovation Ontario North Southwestern Ontario Bioproducts Innovation Network University of Toronto, Centre for Biocomposites and Biomaterials Processing University of Guelph Syngenta Canada Sarnia BioIndustrial Park Valle Foam GreenCore Composites Who is the Ontario BioAuto Council?

  11. BioAuto Council Vision To position Ontario as a global leader in the manufacture of automobile parts and related materials from agricultural and forestry feedstocks by the year 2010

  12. We are more than auto! • We also support applications in the construction and packaging sectors!

  13. BioAuto Council activities • Investment attraction – global biopolymer / composites companies • Communications – bioautocouncil.com • Government policy – provincial bio-economy strategy • Research and development – assessment and strategic direction • Commercialization fund

  14. $5 million Investment Fund • Targets biomaterials and bioprocessing (e.g. biopolymers, biocomposites) • Eligible to companies only • Grants or repayable loans to a maximum of $1-million • 50% matching contributions required – where 25% can be in-kind • 60-day service guarantee

  16. Grants Awarded • Valle Foam Industries - $500k • Conversion to soy-based polyurethane foams • Furniture, bedding, packaging, toys • GreenCore Composites Inc. - $750k • Pulp mill micro-fibres • Automotive, construction, consumer products • Global auto parts manufacturer - $1M (to be announced) • Soy-based foam, natural fibre, + other innovations • Global auto parts manufacturer - $766k (to be announced) • Non-toxic, biochemical substitution of phthalate plasticizers

  17. BioCar Research Initiative • 4 year, $18M project • Integrated multi-disciplinary teams across four universities (Guelph, Toronto, Waterloo, Windsor) • Private sector partners include auto companies, a major parts manufacturer, chemical companies and crop producers to facilitate applications • Objective: replace existing fibre-plastic auto-parts with those based on agricultural and forestry biomass • Obstacles: price, performance, supply

  18. Focus on Low Cost Bio-Feedstocks

  19. Development of Performance Fibres • Fibres (examples): • Micro-fibres • Nano-fibres • Carbon-fibres • Up to 30% reduction in raw material use possible through use of performance fibres! • Opens up opportunities for other weight savings e.g. smaller engines, and use of new technologies e.g. fuel cells, batteries

  20. Stem Biomass Available From Major Ontario Crops

  21. Ontario Kraft Pulp Mills
