  1. Study The Air Pollution In Singapore And Their Influence On Plants Growth(Through Rainwater) By: Zhou Jinquan(1P2)(leader) Yi Kuishuai(1P2) Wang Zhi Jian(1P2) Wang Jia Xin(1P2) Bryan Chia Jun Qing(1P1)

  2. Acid Rain • Acid rain can have harmful effects on life and infrastructure. • Caused by emissions of chemicals which react in the atmosphere to produce acids. • Also caused naturally by lightning and volcanic eruptions. • Rainwater below pH value of 5.6 is considered as acidic

  3. Acid Rain • From research, we found out that: • There are particulates in the atmosphere that would dissolve in rainwater • These particulates include volcanic ash, dust, very small rocks etc

  4. Objectives • Study the air pollution in different areas of Singapore • Study whether polluted air/rain has side effect on plant growth

  5. Hypothesis • Polluted air will lead to acid rain • Polluted air will lead to low transparency of rainwater • Polluted air/acid rain will affect the growth of plants

  6. Variables Independent Variables: 1.Locations in Singapore where the rainwater are collected 2. pH value of the water watered to the green beans Dependent Variables: 1.pH value of the rainwater collected 2.Degree of light transparency of the rainwater 3. Height of green bean plants and number of leaves on them (the green bean plants)

  7. Variables • Constant Variables: • 1. Brand of pH paper/pH meter • 2. Type of light absorption meter • 3. Brand and size of containers • 4. Brand of rulers • 5. Type of cotton wools • 6. Type of green beans

  8. Materials • Containers to collect rain water • pH meter • Light absorption meter (UV-Visible Spectra meter) • Green bean • Cotton wools • Rulers • Acids (nitrate + sulfuric acid)

  9. Methodology • Experiment 1: • Collect rainwater from 5 locations in Singapore for a span of 21 days • Measure pH value of rainwater • Measure light transparency of rainwater • Experiment 2: • Plant green beans (42) using water of different pH value, and observe their growth for a span of 9 days and repeat 3 times

  10. Collecting Rainwater(Experiment 1)

  11. Measure The pH Value Of Rainwater (Experiment 1) pH meter

  12. Measure The Light Transparency Of Rainwater (Experiment 1) container particulates Rainwater Light before passing through Light after passed through

  13. Test The Growth Of Green Bean In Water Of Various pH Value (Experiment 2)

  14. Our pH Values (Experiment 1)

  15. Our Light Transparency (Experiment 1)

  16. Green Beans Growth (Experiment 2)Nitrate and Sulfuric Acid

  17. Green Beans Growth Under Water Of Different pH Value At the start of the experiment… Day 3 Day 6 Day 9

  18. Green Beans Growth Under Rainwater of Singapore At the start of the experiment… Day 3 Day 6 Day 9

  19. What We Can Conclude • (Experiment 1) • Woodlands is most polluted area in both light transparency and pH value as compared to other places. • The reason for this is maybe because there are many factories in woodlands • (Experiment 2) • The growth of green beans are arranged from the worst to the best: pH1, pH3, rainwater, pH5, pure water

  20. Singapore’s Air Quality • Singapore’s air quality is good as plants can germinate well under its rainwater. • The difference in pH values is about 1.2 • The difference in light transparencies is about 12% • It would not do much harm to the environment and nature of Singapore • Singapore’s rainwater is not considered as acid rain in some parts of it such as Clementi

  21. Continuation of Investigation We would like to compare the rainwater between east coast park and west coast park We would just collect once and measure its pH value and light transparency. This experiment will be repeated 2 times

  22. Web Report • http://www2.hci.edu.sg/y10hci0399/project2010.html

  23. Common Reflections • Team work is important • Learnt things that could not be learnt in class • Learn about Singapore’s air quality

  24. Restrictions And Further Investigations • Due to lack of time and certain resources, our web report is not final and we will improve on it further as we continue on our project and we will like further investigate if the situation allows us.

  25. Thank You!
