  3. Referees Five Performance Pillars • The referee reviews his performance based on these 5 pillars • Self analyse and coach analyse

Scrum example • Team – tactically • Ball feeding team – stable steady platform • Opposition team – disrupt • Referee – tactically • Fair and safe contest • Referee – technically • Heads above hips • Props straight • Binding • Ball in quick • Referee – management • Opposition loosehead driving in and up • Visualise technical set up and actions • Act upon with appropriate sanction

Tackle example • Team – tactically • Team in possession – quick ball • Opposition team – slow ball or turnover • Referee – tactically • Quality so either quick ball or turnover ball • Referee – technically • Tackle type – is attacker at risk or defender at risk • Tackler – release or get out • Ball carrier – play ball • Post tackle – entry

Tackle example – contd. • Referee – management • Technically observed 4 penalties in a row • Tactically decided to penalise the 4 times • So now from the management aspect what is the referee going to do? • Referee - Management is about processing the tactical decisions made during the game • The trends

Lineout example • Team – tactically • Team in possession – off the top; quality ball • Opposition team – disrupt • Referee – tactically • Quality so either team clean ball • Referee – technically • Gap • Number’s & 2x2 • Throw • Jumpers & lifters • Referee – management • Opposition early lifting • Identify issue • Act upon with sanction

AR Foul play report example • Referee – technically • Listen to the Assistant Referees report • Referee – tactically • Make decision based on the AR’s report • Referee – management • Act on report by talking to captain and player • Referee - technically –“Have I seen it?” • Referee - tactically –“Do I play advantage?” • Referee - management –“What’s the ACC?” Foul play on the field example

Panel Criteria – contd. • How you get your games? • Based on experience and ability • Physical fitness • Game Awareness • Chosen level of involvement • Based on coaches reports and meetings selectors make decision • Selectors request a referee to be viewed up or down a grade • Consider performance • Feedback

  15. Panel Criteria – contd. • How you are going? • Through coaching reports on the RRIMS system • Through discussion with referee coaches at your games • Through talking with coaches on Monday evenings • Through your planning and goal setting • Sharing this with coaches

Panel Finals – best performing • Premier Panel – All Premier finals and 1A final • B Panel – Premier Reserve finals/ 1B/U21/R85/Womens • C Panel – U19/R85/Snr 1-3 • JRC & 1st Years – ASSRFU / JRC finals • ARS – Best performing will get appointed • Feedback will be taken from Clubs and schools, as well as from referee coaching panel/selectors

What are the Referee Squads? • ARRA Academy • 10 referees • Selection based on ability to go to Premiers and beyond • Several addition training days 11 & 25 April; 16 May • Promising Squad • Referees selected to referee Under 16 and below • Northern Region Zone Squad • Referee’s capable of refereeing representative fixtures not appointed by NZRU Referee High Performance • B’s; Colts; Under 18; Under 85Kg • Selection based on ability to referee at this level as well as develop and nurture referees who have potential to referee at the high performance level

What are the Referee Squads? – contd. • Northern Region New Zealand Academy • Selection is an interview with Academy coach and Regional Selectors • Target young referees with the potential to referee at the high performance level • There are 3 Academies in NZ with 5-7 referees in each academy • Northern; Central; Southern • 2 year theoretical training course • Once completed the expectation is to apply learning's on and off the field back in the local province

Importance of 4th & 5th Pillars • As a referee develops and is selected for higher honours the demand increases on the : • Physical pillar • Mental pillar • Physical ability to be at the right place at the right time as the game gets faster • We call this creating time and space • Physical longevity of the athlete • Mentally the referee has to cope with new experiences and pressures on and off the field • Look at the referees profile on how best he/she manages themselves and handles situations
