The Frontier Wars. Unit 2 Lesson 5. Conflicts Continue. After the Treaty of Paris, the British moved out of many of their forts in the United States. Without the help of the British, it became even harder for Native Americans to stop settlers from taking their lands in the Northwest Territory.

  2. Conflicts Continue • After the Treaty of Paris, the British moved out of many of their forts in the United States. • Without the help of the British, it became even harder for Native Americans to stop settlers from taking their lands in the Northwest Territory.

  3. Michikinikwa • To fight the settlers, many Native Americans who lived in the Northwest Territory decided to unite (join together). • Michikinikwa Miami leader known as “Little Turtle”. • Conflicts worsened due to the Treaty of Harmar. • 1790  The United States sent General Josiah Harmar to attack the Miami and Shawnee. • Miami leader Michikinikwa and Shawnee leader Blue Jacket led tribes to defeat Harmar. • 1791  Michikinikwa won an important battle against soldiers led by Arthur St. Clair • St. Clair’s Defeat.

  4. The Tide Turns • Michikinikwa’s victories over Harmar and St. Clair shocked United States leaders. • 1792  President George Washington placed Anthony Wayne in command of the western forces (Northwest Territory).

  5. The Battle of Fallen Timbres • 1793  Wayne ordered the construction of several forts to defend the frontier. • Fort Recovery  built where St. Clair had been defeated. • Native American forces
