  2. Dear Parents, We are so excited about the 2013-2014 school year. It is going to be a great year! Meet our Second Grade Team: Lynette Bohls (Bookworms) Ally Kennaugh (Campers) Laura Pecina (Penguins) Annie White (Wolf Pack) Emily Barrett (Bobcats)

  3. Second Grade Daily Schedule Technology - All classes will go the computer lab at least twice a month. We now have ipads, ipods, and lap tops that may be checked out and used in our classrooms to assist with lessons. If your child would like to bring a device, please contact your child’s teacher if you would like the release form. Art – All classes will attend Art once a week. Counselor - All classes will typically have a 30 minute lesson twice a month. Library – All classes will go once a week to check out books. Books may be returned anytime to avoid overdue fines. Music – All classes will attend Music once a week. P.E. – All classes go three times a week for physical activity. Please check your teacher’s website for individual class schedules.

  8. Homework In accordance with the AISD policy, it is recommended that 2nd Grade Students should spend an average of 20 minutes a night collectively on homework. We expect students to read and practice math facts every night. Reading Response Logs will be in each students’ green “GO” folder to be completed and turned in each week. Other homework assignments may occasionally be sent home.

  9. Spelling Spelling is a highly complex task that is gradually mastered over a period of time as an individual becomes acquainted with the properties and purposes of written language. Spelling involves the use of strategies, which may vary according to the words being attempted and the knowledge that the writer has acquired through experiences with words. -Faye Bolton and Diane Snowball Invented spelling is NOT something we simply teach; it’s what young writers have historically done on their own in the process of trying to figure out how written language works. Students who are encouraged to use invented spelling make generalizations about words and patterns, write more, and write with more interesting vocabulary, since they are not limited to words they know how to spell. Our standards are high and students are expected to spell correctly a core of high frequency words all of the time. When students over rely on memorization, they focus on learning individual words, failing to view spelling as a conceptual language system with generalizations and patterns that can be applied to unfamiliar words.

  10. Spelling At this time, Second Grade has chosen not to have weekly spelling tests, however, students will be held accountable for the concept or rule being taught. We will be working on word work (spelling, decoding, word families, suffixes, prefixes, etc.) during our Daily 5 class time and assessing your students’ progress in their everyday writing. We will post on the website lists of high frequency words for students to practice and identify when reading in the written environment around them daily. • The Second Grade Team will place the spelling rules/concepts we are learning in our weekly newsletter. Check the 2nd grade website for more Spelling resources.

  11. Grades In Second Grade students receive numerical grades. Grades are based on the following scale: A: 90-100 B: 80-89 C: 70-79 F: 69 and below If a student receives a grade below a 70, they are given the opportunity to re-do the work and can make no more than a 70 on the assignment.

  12. Attendance • Students are greeted at 7:45 a.m. • Students are counted tardy if they do not arrive by 7:55 a.m. • Inform your child’s teacher of any absence by email, phone, or written note. • Students are required to bring a written note/Doctor’s note upon returning to school. • An absence will be counted as unexcused without a written note turned in within 5 days to the Attendance Clerk (an email will not suffice as an excuse note).

  13. Transportation • Notification is required for any change in dismissal as soon as possible! • Please understand that Teachers are unable to check their e-mail during the day and may not be aware of the change. • Calling the Office for last minute changes • is the best way to ensure that your • child’s teacher receives the message • of the change in time.

  14. 2nd Grade Dismissal Procedures • Carpool Lane (front entrance of the school) • Students will be dismissed by an assigned teacher when their designated ride arrives at the front of the building. • The person picking up the student will stay in their car in the carpool lane and the student will be sent to the car after high-fiving the assigned teacher . • Walkers / Park & Pick-Up “Walk Ups” (in front of gym) • Students who walk will be dismissed when the bell rings. • Students designated as walk-ups (parents who park to pick up) will be dismissed when the parent arrives at the 2nd grade location and the teacher has high-fived the student. • PLEASE DO NOT PARK IN THE BUS AND DAY CARE LANE. • Rainy Day Dismissal Procedures • Carpool Lane • A teacher will be stationed by the lane to get names of students • A teacher will be stationed by the doorway to send student out • Student will be brought to the car • Walkers / Park & Pick-Up (Walk-Ups) • Students will be assembled at the North Entrance • Teachers will be stationed at the door , parents will form a line along the sidewalk • Students will be released as each parent gets to the front of the line • IF THERE IS A CHANGE IN THE WAY YOUR CHILD WILL BE GETTING HOME ON THESE DAYS, THE TEACHER MUST BE NOTIFIED AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. Please display your green dismissal sign at all times.

  15. Expectations • CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT • All-Star Clip Chart / Scorebook • Possible Consequences: • Students sign their name in the Scorebook and indicate which rule was broken • Recess laps • Think Sheet • Teacher/Administrator Discretion • Positive Reinforcement: • Participate in classroom sport activity • Minute-to-Win-It Activity • Teacher Discretion • Money System • Students will earn a salary and pay rent each week • Students can be fined for breaking a classroom law • Students can purchase classroom rewards
