  1. Dogwood Elementary GUIDANCE & COUNSELING Helping Children Become Leaders

  2. What We Do: The guidance counselors at Dogwood Elementary are partners in student achievement. It is their role to help promote social/emotional, academic, and career development through classroom guidance lessons, small group and individual counseling. When a student is faced with an emotional situation at home or at school that interferes with learning in the classroom, the counselors work with that student so they can rejoin the classroom and have a greater opportunity for learning.

  3. Parent’s Page Dear Parents/Guardians, As your child’s school counselors, our main goal is to enable them to have a positive and healthy experience at school. This includes areas of social/emotional, academic and career development. We are here to help your child through difficulties they may be experiencing to have the best chance at succeeding in school. We encourage you to call us with any concerns or questions.

  4. How We Work With Students: Class Guidance Lessons We meet once a week with each class to discuss topics related to social/emotional, academic and career development. Our lessons follow the criteria set forth through the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education Comprehensive Guidance Program. Small Groups A variety of small groups are offered throughout the year and take place during school wide intervention times. Some examples of topics include friendship, social skills, anger management, and study skills. Students can be referred to a small group by their teacher, parent, principals or guidance counselor. . Individual Meetings School counselors provide structured, goal-oriented counseling for students who are experiencing educational difficulties, personal concerns, or normal developmental tasks. Individual counseling assists students in identifying problems, causes, alternatives, and possible consequences so they can make appropriate responses.

  5. When Do Students Visit the Counselor? How Do Students Visit the Counselor? Ask their teacher. Stop by the counselor’s office during free times. Students can be referred by a teacher, parent, principals, or counselor. When they are . . . • Having strong feelings that are getting in the way of learning (anger, sadness, confusion, etc.) • Having difficulties with friends or family members. • Feeling as if they are being bullied. • Just needing to talk to someone.
