  2. Texas Breaks Away • Declare Independence • Sam Houston is leader of the new republic • Santa Anna, Mexican Leader • Attempts to Crush Rebellion

  3. Alamo • 200 Texans trapped at the Alamo • Colonel W. B. Travis refuses to surrender • Santa Anna wipes out every man after a 13 day siege by his men • Battle Cry- “Remember the Alamo” for the rest of the conflict

  4. Goliad • 400 American volunteers, surrender at Goliad • All “butchered” by Mexicans • Delayed Mexican advancements • Increased American opposition & resentment • Battle Cry- “Remember Goliad” and “Death to Santa Anna”

  5. San Jacinto • Houston vs. Santa Anna • 1300 Mexicans vs. 900 Texans • Mexican siesta, surprise attack by Houston • Mexican forces crushed • Santa Anna has to sign 2 treaties

  6. Treaties of Velasco • Mexicans can’t bear arms against Texans • No more hostilities • Rio Grande is new southern border • Mexico must acknowledge Texas’s independence

  7. Jackson Oversteps Power? • Jackson recognizes Texas’s independence the day before he left office • Conflict of Texas’s acceptance into Union • Slavery is major hindrance to admission • Admission expands slavery, causes unbalance of slave/non-slavery states

  8. Spread of Democracy • US “gains” more territory, wins more battles • Power of U.S increases and U.S. has superiority over Mexico
