  1. Freshman Science Courses 2017-2018

  2. Science Graduation Requirements • Biology • Physical Science or Physics • 8th grade Physical Science DOES fill this requirement • 2 additional science courses • ONE of these must be Chemistry, Environmental Science, Earth Systems, OR an AP/IB Science

  3. Science Courses Offered • Biology • Honors Biology • Physical Science • Chemistry • Honors Chemistry • Earth Systems • Environmental Science • Human Anatomy and Physiology • Forensic Science • Physics • AP Physics 1 • AP Physics C: Mechanics • AP Biology • AP Chemistry • AP Environmental Science • IB Biology HL • IB Physics HL • IB Chemistry SL • IB Environmental Studies SL

  4. 9th Grade Course Options • All freshmen must take Biology • 8th grade teachers may recommend students for the on-level or honors course • Biology is a graduation requirement • 20% of the Biology grade is determined by the End of Course (EOC) test

  5. Honors Biology • Rigorous course that will prepare students for AP/IB Biology • Recommended students must meet the following criteria: • Proficient score on Life Science EOG Milestones assessment • High grade in Advanced Physical Science (without test retakes) • Routinely superior classroom performance as compared to classmates • Strong study habits and above average maturity • Strong math student • Skills/ability to complete rigorous research projects

  6. On Level Biology • For students that do not meet the requirements for the honors course or do not wish to take AP/IB Biology • The on-level course: • Prepares students for the End of Course exam • Allows students to pursue advanced science courses later in high school • Is taught by outstanding, knowledgeable teachers

  7. Waivers Students who waive against teacher recommendation into the Honors Biology course typically make lower grades than those who were recommended. Students are STRONGLY encouraged to follow teacher recommendations.

  8. Biology Units of Study • Scientific Methods • Biochemistry • Cells • Energetics • Mitosis and Meiosis • DNA Processes • Genetics • Evolution • Classification • Ecology State standards can be found on the website – www.georgiastandards.org

  9. Typical Science Pathways

  10. The Math-Science Connection • Students are not required to take accelerated math courses to meet the prerequisites for AP/IB sciences. • However, Chemistry and Physics classes require strong math abilities.

  11. Tips for Science Success • Complete formative assignments to prepare for summative assessments • Study a little each and every day • Seek out extra help when you need it – we are here to help!
