  2. RECAP format • Opening, Introductions and key note addresses • Health human resource policy issues for Africa: Challenges and tripartite role and policy influence summary • SRH key to MDGs • Comprehensive wellness centers for HCWs country approaches summary

Opening and Introductions • Workshop started by a prayer at 9.10 am. • Acknowledgement to partners NNA and CNA • Introductions by countries as listed-Lesotho, Malawi, Angola, Mozambique, Swaziland, Mauritious,DRC, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Zambia and later Tanzania • Welcoming remarks by SANNAM coordinator highlighted the theme and reminded members to embark on the coming elections

Important remarks and Key note Speech 1-President SANAAM • Reminded of birth of SANAAM in 2001 with slogan ‘where there is a will there is a way’. • Highlights on what to reflect e.g. who is most affected by HIV and AIDS- 95% of PLWA are in countries with poor resources • Motivated nurse leaders to make a difference e.g. by reflecting on low salaries, overburdened with un favorable situations • Nurses need to be protected • Great need for commitment

Important remarks and Key note Speech 2- President SANNAM • Critical challenges to SANAAM in 6 pillars • Integration of HIV/AIDS interventions into poverty reduction strategy • Microeconomic stability and economic growth • Empowering the poor • Fair distribution of resources • Human capital development/improving quality of life • Good governance

Important remarks and Key note Speech 3- by network partners • Looking at challenges more specifically to Nursing 3 pillars were summarized by NNA President as:- • Professional pillar+ quality care +quality education in sufficient numbers = challenge authorities for quality • Nurses care for Each other professionally, socially and personally • Environmental pillar + addressing the changing environment and the care for the future

Important remarks and Key note Speech 3- by CNA • CNA representative addressed the areas by looking at the theme • Nurse Leaders for Action; What SANAAM is all about leading and CNA as partners have the supportive role at least agreed to support next 5 years. • Partnership rolein strengthening Nursing associations in Africa so that SANNAM is able to push policy matters to governments

Mauritius – A complex issue and nurses not always consulted, need for capacity building DENOSA- Need for appropriate structures to empower nurses on the ground Zambia-Nurses are in subordinate positions – Advocacy role be strengthened Lesotho-Migration and absence of policies in that the nurses cannot function well- need for restructuring Health human resource policy issues for Africa: Summary and recommendations by countries

DRC- nurses are represented in policy matters but the biggest problem is HIV and AIDS, the problem does not exclude HCWs – advocacy role for reduction of sexual violence strengthened Zimbabwe- Mass exodus now to New-Zealand- much work needed for retention along with political issues Botswana-Not better off -700 + migrated unaffordable holidays-improved monitoring needed by having more staffing Health human resource policy issues for Africa: Summary and recommendations by countries

SRHR mentioned in MDGs 3, 4,5 and 6 Need to work for all goals Nurses and midwives have primary contact, capacity and location amongst the poor are met by them, they channel referrals than any other professional, provide essential life saving interventions their advocacy and educative role are the key to meet MDGs Sexual and reproductive Health rights and MDGs- why nurses and midwives ?

  11. Comprehensive wellness centers for HCWs country approaches • The wellness centres in all countries appreciated to provide support, counseling, stress relief and other essential services to carers • Although in different stages of development , all countries are maximizing their potentials to solicit further funding for the excellent services -Congratulations
