  1. SCATTERING DI RUTHERFORD NIDIA BERGOMI  MARCO GILIBERTI UNIVERSITA' DEGLI STUDI DI MILANO DIPARTIMENTO DI FISICA Congresso del Dipartimento di Fisica Highlights in Physics 2005 11–14 October 2005, Dipartimento di Fisica, Università di Milano Quanta-Mi and related researches in Modern Physics Education N. Bergomi*, L. Cazzaniga*, M. Giliberti† and G. Vegni† * SILSIS-MI † Dipartimento di Fisica, Università di Milano • It’s about 20 years that many international research groups, including the Milan group, have been studying the teaching/learnig modalities of Modern Physics. • The analysis we made in Milan of the main obtained results give some clear indications for constructing an effective teaching of quantum physics for secondary school students: • Start from well stated and clear phenomenological aspects • Follow a coherent formulation of quantum physics and get even to formal aspects • Avoid semiclassical way of reasoning • SOFTWARE PRODUCTION: • The Compton effect • The decay of the muon • Ionizing radiation • The Rutherfor scattering EXPERIMENTATIONS • S.I.L.S.I.S.-MI • 6 YEARS OF • 18-hours training course “QUANTUM THEORIES” • 24-hours related • LABORATORY COURSE ON QUANTUM PHYSICS EDUCATION • 24 hours • COMPUTER METHODS IN PHYSICS QUANTA-MI THE MILAN APPROACH TO QUANTUM TEACHING Quanta-Mi: Guide-lines 1. don’t create a gap constructing Modern Physics against Classical Physics. “In the framework of the CERN Education Award competition, Luigia Cazzaniga took her pupils to a laboratory run by Milan University's physics department. There they took part in their first particle physics experiment to study the tracks left by alpha particles in a cloud chamber. A total of three scientists, six secondary school teachers and seven classes were involved in the project, which was the WINNER OF THE CERN EDUCATION AWARD 2003” 2. build a general coherent picture of Quantum Physics, “consistent” with Classical Physics. 3. Quantum Physics is not equivalent to Quantum Mechanics and its ontology. The most complete Quantum Theory that we have now is the Quantum Fields Theory so start from it 4. have in mind the whole last century and not only its first 30 years. Quanta-Mi: The Approach Analogy of behavior of free propagating light and matter pencils in similar circumstances (no self-interaction) HIGH SCHOOL CASE STUDIES SCIENTIFIC HIGH SCHOOL OF DESIO: 200 students. 10 hours of lesson.
