CAVEATS & CLARIFICATIONS 1) Belief that the L1 be used in “beginner level” classrooms (sparingly at the intermediate level). 2) L1 used only when needed and primarily for lexical and form-related comparisons during lectures/discussions. 3) Does not imply that the use of the L1 is superior (in defense against those who would consider L1 use bad pedagogy). 4) Exclusive use of the L2 when students are performing in-class tasks (no exceptions).

  4. BEGINNER EXPERIENCE LESS OVERWHELMING Novice learners of a second language often exhibit low confidence in their proficiency with the L2.... Exclusive use of the L2 can be overwhelming for some of these students...

  6. IMPROVED EFFICIENCY! Typical CEGEP level 100 class is: Typical CEGEP level 100 class is offered once a week and totals 45 hours of instruction. Focuses on all 4 skills. - Don't have the luxury of intensive communicative language classes
