  1. Competency 004A & B The Master Technology Teacher knows and applies basic strategies and techniques for using digital video technology. February 28, 2012 Kate Binns

  2. Competency 004: A Demonstrates knowledge of basic concepts relating to video technology (e.g. analog, digital) and understands differences and similarities between linear and nonlinearediting.

  3. Digital vs Analog Analog Digital Almost all modern technology uses digital image capturing. Uses a pattern of 0s & 1s to record images DVDs, Digital8, DVCam • Think…. • Uses an electrical signal to capture images on magnetic tape. • VHS, 8mm, Betamax

  4. Digital vs Analog • Lower resolution • Degrades when copied • Edited with VCR set-up • Linear Editing • Records electronically on magnetic tape • Who has a VCR still? • High resolution • Does not degrade when • copied • Edited with computer • Nonlinear editing • Records with pattern of numbers • DVD players, computers • Records video

  5. Nonlinear vs Linear Editing Nonlinear Editing- Digital Linear Editing- Analog “Tape to Tape” 2 VCRs, 1-2 monitors, cables, tapes Simple Allows users to edit and insert audio • Computer Editing • Source device, computer (200 MHz processor, 64 MB Ram, 1 GB of freespace), capture device*, leads, software, monitor • Simple to set up, but harder to understand how to use*

  6. Linear VsNonlinear • Can “skip” to scene • Digital recording • DVDs/CDs • Computer, video recorder, • software • Original not lost after editing • Uses fast forward & rewind • Analog recording • VHS • Simple Set-Up • 2 VCRs, 1-2 monitors, • cables, tapes • Original lost after editing • Add and Remove Sound, Images, and Text

  7. But don’t take my word for it… Studio 1 Shows you the Difference!

  8. Competency 004: B Demonstrates knowledge of basic concepts of video filming (e.g. composition, ratio of image to frame, position in frame, line of gaze, pans/tilts, movement, perspective).

  9. Video Filming • Webcam • Video Cameras • Flip cameras • Cell Phones

  10. Let’s Check it Out! • Basic Examples of Pan, Zoom, and Tilt
