  6. The Subject Portals Project • Background • Originally funded by JISC as part of the 5/99 Learning and Teaching programme • Now part of the JISC Portals programme • Project ends in August 2004 • Beta demonstrators available over the summer

  7. Original Project Rationale UK HE/FE Information Environment • Lots of disparate information services • Each with its own user interface • Many interfaces to learn, search, and to keep up to date with JISC 5 Year Strategy for the IE • Clear need to enhance discovery of and access to content • Concept: to provide seamless discovery across multiple content providers

Aims of SPP • To investigate the portalisation of RDN services • To provide seamless access to a range of subject based information resources for users in the UK Higher and Further Education community (and beyond) • Use same technology to surface subject based content in third party environments e.g. library or institutional portals, etc.

  9. Beta Services • Cross searching of RDN catalogues with other bibliographic and full text sources • Search history, record storage and exporting facilities • Aggregating Newsfeeds for browsing or searching • Ejournal search • Email alerts based on subject and information preferences

  10. Other Features • Information customisable by portal administrator and by the end user • Cross search supports OpenURL linking • Authentication via Athens Single Sign-On or local scheme

  11. Changing Environment • One stop shop no longer a reality • Users have multiple roles and identities • Make information available wherever makes sense to users rather than try to force change in their information seeking behaviour

  12. SPP Approach • Flexible, building block approach • “Portlets” – components of discrete information and functionality • Offer a menu of portlets (mix and match) • Developed to standards (JSR-168) so that they can be easily integrated into standards compliant portals

  19. SPP Outcomes • Beta demonstrators available for testing and evaluation over the summer • Some features may get adopted into the RDN services • Making RDN information easily available in other environments • Software available as Open Source to encourage continued development
