  2. The 1st Battle of Bull Run • The war was fought in Manassas Virginia. It Had 2 names The union called it the first battle of Bull Run and the Confederate called it the First Manassas. • The date was July 21, 1861

  3. Overview • Who: 28,450 union troops lead by General Irvin McDowell • 32,230 Confederate troops lead by General Joseph E. Johnston • What: The North marched against the confederate capitol since they thought it would bring a quick end to the war. • The two armies met at Bull Run

  4. Overview Where: Manassas Virginia When: July 21, 1861 Why: The North thought it would bring a quick end to the war. How: The Union Army under pressure to crush the rebellion in the South, marched toward Richmond, met the Confederate forces comin’ nort’ from Manassas, a southern base.

  5. Statistics • 28,450 total Union troops fought • 32,230 total Confederate troops fought • 2,950 Union soldiers died • 1,750 Confederate soldiers died • Wounded: 7,000 Confederates soldiers • Wounded: 10,000 Union Soldiers

  6. Brigadier General Irvin McDowell(1818-1885) • An Ohio native who was educated in France then returned to the U.S to attend West Point where he graduated in 1838. He fought in the Mexican war then during the interwar he served in the adjutant general’s department. He was promoted to an Army Brigadier then was assigned to command the troops around the Capitol. He was then sent to Manassas to fight the Confederates but the raw volunteers could not accomplish the task of defeating them.

  7. Brigadier General Joseph E. Johnston(1807-1891) • He started his career with 8 years in the artillery then he resigned for a year. He rejoined the army to fight in the Mexican War, he won to brevets. He was appointed quartermaster general and remained in service until the secession of his native state. He was reduced to a brigadier general when he joined the Confederacy. In the Battle of Manassas he moved his army to support Beauregard’s forces. After the battle he was replaced by Robert E. Lee

  8. General Pierre G.T. Beauregard (1818-1893 • Was native to Louisiana and graduated second in the class of 1838 from West Point. He was reduced to corps command under Johnston the day before 1st Bull Run. During the battle Beauregard, being familiar with the field exercised tactical command. He was named a full general from the date of the battle. In early 1862 he was sent to the West as Albert Sydney Johnston’s second in command.

  11. Conclusion • The First Battle of Bull Run was important because it shattered the Union’s hopes of winning the war quickly and easily. It was also a wake up call for the North, it showed them that this would be a long and bloody war. It showed them that they would need new leadership and improved training if they were to win the war.
