  1. The Autoconfiguration of Recursive DNS Server and the Optimization of DNS Name Resolution in Hierarchical Mobile IPv6 draft-jeong-hmipv6-dns-optimization-00.txt Jae-Hoon Jeong, Jung-Soo Park, Kyeong-Jin Lee, Hyoung-Jun Kim ETRI18th March 2003 56th IETF – San Francisco, California, USApaul@etri.re.kr IETF56 DNSOP WG

  2. Motivation of the draft • The current DNS name resolution depends on fixed recursive DNS server(s) preconfigured in the node if we don’t use DHCPv6. • But, this is not suitable in the mobile IPv6 environment. • In the respect of DNS name resolution time. • What solutions are there to save DNS name resolution time? • This draft suggests one of the possible solutions. IETF56 DNSOP WG

  3. Idea of the draft • Autoconfiguration of recursive DNS server (RDNSS) • Through RA-based DNS discovery, a mobile node can configure the address of recursive DNS server(s) placed in the visited network statelessly. • Optimization of DNS name resolution • It is possible by using the local recursive DNS server placed in the visited network instead of that placed in the home network. • The scope of this draft • Hierarchical Mobile IPv6 Network • But the idea of this draft can be applied to mobile IPv6 network or normal IPv6 network. IETF56 DNSOP WG

  4. RDNSS1 Current DNS service scenario (1/2) DNS Server (DNSS) Web Server(WS) RDNSS : Recursive DNS Server 3 Internet Home Agent(HA) Mobility Anchor Point(MAP) 2 5 1 RDNSS2 4 MN Home Network Foreign Network IETF56 DNSOP WG

  5. RDNSS1 Current DNS service scenario (2/2): Dog-legged DNS name resolution DNS Server (DNSS) Web Server(WS) RDNSS : Recursive DNS Server 3 Internet Home Agent(HA) Mobility Anchor Point(MAP) 2 5 4 RDNSS2 1 MN Home Network Foreign Network IETF56 DNSOP WG

  7. Next steps • The next step of the draft • Add solicited DNS discovery • Through RS message that solicits the address of recursive DNS server placed in the visited network. • Consideration of extension to mobile IPv6 • Is this draft valuable to discuss as dnsop wg draft? IETF56 DNSOP WG
