Ural Federal District (Okrug)General Information • Territory: 1 788 900 sq. km., 10,5% of Russian territory. • Population: 12 240 382 people; 8,62% of Russian population, • Ural Federal District combined of 6 regions (oblast): • Sverdlovsk Region (4,3 mln people) • Chelyabinsk Region (3,5 mln people) • Ygra (Hanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug) (1,5 mln people) • Tyumen Region (1,35 mln people) • Kurgan Region (ca 1 mln people) • Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug (0,5 mln people • Main cities: Yekaterinburg, Chelyabinsk, Tyumen, Kurgan, Surgut, Nizhnevartovsk, New Urengoy, Izhevsk, Nizhny Tagil, Magnitogorsk, Kurgan, Serov, Zlatoust, Miass, Sterlitamak, Salavat, Pervouralsk, Kamensk-Uralsky, Orsk, Lisva, Kizel. • Sverdlovsk Region and Chelyabinsk Region are more urbanized comparing to other regions.

Ural Federal District (Okrug)Information about Regions The most active exporting regions in 2010 were: Sverdlovsk region, whose share in the foreign trade of the district is 54.1%, Chelyabinsk region - 36%, others altogether 9,9% Leader in import from abroad - Sverdlovsk region, Tyumen, Chelyabinsk & Yugra have close figures (ca 1,5 bln USD in 2009). Leaders in import of technologies in 2009 (Sverdlovsk 51, Tyumen 34, Ygra 32, Chelyabinsk 14). Chelyabinsk & Sverdlovsk are leaders in technological export. Amount of companies with foreign capital in 2009 are mainly in Sverdlovsk 250, Tyumen 236 and Chelyabinsk 141, Yugra 96. In Tyumen they employ less employees, but have highest turnover. Average salary in 2009 – Yamal is highest in Russia, Yugra 4th, Tyumen 5th . Sverdlovsk & Chelyabinsk are national leaders in machine building.

Visit to forest technology park, organization supporting technology transfer and commercialization of innovations in the industry. • Cluster organizes own annual events, as for example Euro-Asian forest industry Forum in the end of May 2012, including international scientific conference on woodworking. • Through cluster is possible to meet forest industry companies and associations, as for example non commercial partnership “Wooden housing of Ural”.

Meetings in Yekaterinburg (2) • International Exhibition Center: • Newly opened center is planned as core of business activities in the region. • When ready, center will offer 150 000 m2, at the moment in operation are 50 000 m2. • Center hosts annual large international and high-level event InnoProm, where companies and authorities participate. Event is organized in the middle of July. • Many regional business events in fields of energy, construction, forestry and machine building are organized by local event company Ural Vystavka, providing information on events also in English on their web site. • Innovation infrastructure hub. • The hub unites a number of innovation and business support organizations, such as business incubators, funding agencies. Members of the hub are very active in organizing events and developing contacts between companies, especially innovative SMEs. • Hub organizations promote and subsidize international innovation and technology cooperation. • Meeting with young innovative companies and other SMEs (preferable a round table) in the Ural Federal University Business Incubator. Incubator cooperates with national organizations, such as Skolkovo, Rosnano and funding agency FASIE. Local version: http://bit-konkurs.ru/Ural • Expected 700-800 participants from business and authorities, invited speakers from Austria, Germany, Israel, USA and Finland. • Good coverage in local media. • Opportunity to organize a separate session, representing Finnish best practices and technologies. • “Small energy generation” business association • The association promotes mainly small CHP, 2,4,6 MW, using gas, diesel, solar, winder and hydro energy. Still this is not the only solution in demand by local industries. • The association is active in organizing own events, as for example Energy Conference in October in Chelyabinsk with over 400 participants.

Meetings in Chelyabinsk (2) • Regional administration: • Meetings with Ministry of economic development, which is also responsible for cooperation with foreign investors and regional economy, as well as coordination of key investment projects • Meetings with innovative and local small and medium size companies in Innovative Business Incubator of Chelyabinsk • Incubator is active player for SMEs in the region and is supported by regional authorities. • Visit to one of regional large production companies, depending on Finnish delegates interests. • Learn about production standards and opportunities for cooperation with large regional companies. • Local famous brands in metal processing, machine building and food production.

Programmes objective is to combine high level research with technology, design and know-how • Aim is to boost new business and jobs as well as strong competitiveness that is based on regional specialisation • OSKE offers networks and services for companies, universities and research institutions • Annual funding is about 23 M€, half of it is government funding • There are around 170 people working with the OSKE basic funding • The programme is administered by the Ministry of Employment and the Economy
