  1. Mobile Assessment and Online Recognition using QTI solutions.

  2. Tools we have built using QTI • QTImPlayer on an MS Windows Mobile phone • iQTI is the re-development of the QTImPlayer as a iPhone application. Usability has also been improved • GURU is an online recognition application where recognition tools are created and used to assist the recognition process for students and teachers.

  3. IMS standards used • The iQTI player renders IMS packaged QTI 2.1 files. Results are stored in XML. • GURU uses equella to render IMS packaged QTI 2.1 files. Results are written back to Equella and are stored in XML as Equella items. Equella is used as the ePortfolio in GURU.

  4. What is the QTImPlayer? • It is an assessment tool that is AQTF (quality system) compliant and built to IMS QTI standards on a hand held device • It allows teachers and assessors to assess “on the job” and record their assessment and gathered evidence • Once recorded the results can be emailed to an organisations ICT system and individuals • No more double entering of data and paper based records transported from one job to another

  5. QTI interactions supported • One line text boxes • Extended text interaction – Multi-line text boxes • Multiple Choice • Attached Documents or Photos (Only photos on the iPhone)

  6. The New Practices 2007 Tas 402 Project has successfully built and trialled • The ability to download to smart phones QTI assessment tools in the field • “On the Job” assessment capability including the ability to attach video, audio and doc files as evidence of the assessment • The ability to store incomplete assessments for future re-assessment • Uploading of the completed QTI assessment results using email to the RTO’s ICT systems

  7. Compass Paper based assessment tool converted to QTI tool using a QTI Creator from the data base

  8. QTI tools available • Assignment/project •          Case Study •          Demonstration Checklist •          Portfolio •          Product/Work Sample •          Checklist for Simulation/Role Play •          Work Diary/Journal/Profile •          Oral Question •          Multiple Choice Question •          Observation Checklist •          Written Question •          Self Assessment •          Workplace Testimonial •          Preparing for Recognition

  9. Download and respond to assessment tools on their smart or iPhone

  10. Answer/complete the assessment tool

  11. Attach additional critical evidence

  12. Email or Upload to the Equella ePortfolio

  13. Teacher assesses submitted work and enters results in the Student Management System • This allows the Training Plan to be negotiated if one is required • The Notes Page can be used by Student and Teacher • Once finalised the student undertakes training and study to gain the qualification

  14. Where the QTImPlayer is now implemented • The Tasmanian Polytechnic • The Tasmanian Skills Institute • New England TAFE (NSW) • Dairy Australia, National Centre for Dairy Education • Two Australian Private RTO’s • We are working with 4 other organisations currently for their implementation.

  15. To find out more about the QTImPlayer go to http://qti2007.flexiblelearning.net.au/ • Here you can down load your fee copy of the QTImPlayer and some sample assessment tools

  16. GURU (read with next slide) • Students enrolled using SMS • Teacher creates relevant assessment tool (see screen 8 for types) detailing critical evidence for recognition • QTI Creator places assessment tools in the students ePortfolio in The learning Edge (Equella) • Student accesses Equella and provides critical evidence required for Recognition that they can supply. • Teacher assesses the students submissions and grants full or part Recognition based in the critical evidence requirements of the Training Package (curriculum) • If part Recognition is granted GURU produces a training plan so the student and teacher are aware of the competencies needed to gain the qualification.

  17. Advantages Using QTI solutions the Tasmanian Polytechnic and Skills Institute can expedite Skills Acquisition by providing • On the job training and assessment opportunities using mobile devices opposed to a paper based model providing efficiencies • Streamlining the Recognition (RPL) process by providing an online service.

  18. “The Tasmanian Polytechnic has redeveloped the QTImPlayer ™ that was originally developed in a joint New Practices project of TAFE Tasmania with the Institute for Working Futures Pty Ltd in 2005 based on previous research by Dr Marc Bowles of the Institute for Working Futures Pty Ltd.”
