  1. Electronegativity and Polarity Pg. 61

  2. Electron Affinity • The measure of the tendency of an atom to except an electron • Same trend as electronegativity • The character and type of bond can be predicted by looking at the electronegativity values of each element

  3. Polar covalent bonds • Covalent compounds in which the atoms are the same share the electrons equally • Covalent compounds in which the elements are different result in unequal sharing of electrons • Creates a polar covalent bonds • Use to show areas of partial negativity and to show areas of partial positivity.

  4. Molecular Polarity • Molecules are either polar or nonpolar • Polar molecules have a partial negative charge on one side and partial positive on the other. • Called a dipole • Symmetrical compounds are nonpolar

  5. Steps to determining polarity • 1. Consider each bond in the compound and use the symbols to determine if there is a positive end and a negative end • 2. consider the shape of the molecule. If there is an end that is positive and an end that is negative it is polar • Ex. CCl4, AlCl3, SiO2

  6. Practicepg. 62 • Use the compounds from page 60 and decide if each is polar or nonpolar
