Background • The government’s target is that all pupils will be able to access a personalised online workspace, capable of supporting an e-portfolio, by 2008 • Support of both Local Authorities for regional provision - Ease of use and deployment across both counties • Cumbria Pathfinder 14-19 & Lancashire Schools’ ICT Team • Cost effective aggregation of development, infrastructure & support systems • Lancaster University contract - Security and resilience www.cleo.net.uk

Why Moodle? • Open source software • Underpinned by sound educational philosophy - promotes communication, collaboration, personalisation and learner independence • Flexible, easily adapted to curriculum delivery • Easy and intuitive, if you can attach a file to an email you can use Moodle www.cleo.net.uk

Content for learning & teaching • CLEO/LA consultants involved with a wide range of schools and early adopters in curriculum based projects • Developing exemplar Moodle for release as vle.cleo.net.uk 1st wk Nov – wide range of example courses and uses • New larger icon set for Primary • Dida (NWLG) resources uploaded to all secondary Moodles • Liaison with Pathe, Creative Archive, Tuned-In, BBC Jam & Skoool (Intel) over licence for their content to either preload or use as examples • Nelson-Thornes material - pilot www.cleo.net.uk

  6. Admin & Training • Autumn training dates booked and trainers identified – begin Oct ’06 • Website updated In progress • Support materials • Procurement of administrator training programme www.cleo.net.uk

Infrastructure & Systems • Replicating databases/file synchronisation • Server farm expansion in progress • 90 school moodles (further Lancs due) • New school Moodle creation – including development of online sign-up form • Moodle 1.6 upgrade & secure sign-on login.vle.cleo.net.uk In progress: • Load balancing servers in remote locations • Setting up “partner” schools programme www.cleo.net.uk

  8. Summary • Option supported by LAs: resilient and scalable • Tailored for schools, pupils and teachers • Minimise and aggregate costs, systems, support, training, content delivery and infrastructure • Developments to support the 2008 and 2010 targets www.cleo.net.uk
