  4. Planned Leave • A one-time, one semester leave for any regular fall or spring semester • Students maintain active student status and do not need to reapply to CSU for the following term.

  5. Benefits of Planned Leave • Students on Planned Leave retain their current major(s)/minor(s) • Allowed to register during the priority registration period appropriate to their major/class level • Continue to have access to their CSU e-mail account and receive ongoing communication from campus • No break in enrollment on CSU transcript

  6. Who can take Planned Leave? • An Undergraduate Degree Seeking Student • Resident Instruction (RI) • OnlinePlus (CE) • Seeking a first bachelor’s degree • In Good Academic Standing or Academic Probation 1 or 2.

  7. When can a student take Planned Leave? • Must be completing or have completed first semester as an admitted student • Students can register for Planned Leave one time • Any one regular fall or spring semester • Deadlines: • August 13 for Fall • January 1 for Spring

  8. When will Planned Leave be available? • Starting Fall 2013 • Available with Fall 2013 registration

  9. Why must students have approval to take a Planned Leave? • The University wishes to ensure that students are fully supported and fully understand all the ramifications of taking a Planned Leave • CSU encourages each student to develop a plan for returning and completing his or her degree

  21. Academic Advising • Review the general education and major requirements that need to be fulfilled upon return • Explore options to continue with your course of study without utilizing planned leave

  22. Instructors and Departments • Address any incomplete grades or questions and concerns about course work in progress that you are expected to complete prior to taking Planned Leave

Athletics Compliance • Students participating in NCAA Division I sports must have approval of the Compliance Office before taking a Planned Leave • Students participating in any of CSU's competitive, Intercollegiate (intramural) Sport club programs are eligible for Planned Leave according to general requirements and do not need the permission of the Department of Athletics

International Students / Study Abroad: • International students must discuss their options for a Planned Leave with International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) to determine the impact of the Planned Leave on their immigration status   • Planned Leave is appropriate for any eligible student who will be traveling abroad for non-academic/non-credit purposes

Can students use Planned Leave to attend another institution and transfer work back to CSU? • U.S. post-secondary institution • Must submit to the Registrar's Office an official transcript for academic work completed • International post-secondary institution • must have a conversation with, and follow the processes of, the Office of International Program's Study Abroad to learn about the important steps which need to be completed prior to departure

  28. What happens if a student registers for courses and later wants to request a Planned Leave? • Students cannot be simultaneously enrolled in courses AND registered for Planned Leave. • Students must drop their courses before they can complete the Planned Leave request in RAMweb

  29. What if a student registers for Planned Leave and then decides to stay at CSU? • Contact the Registrar's Office at (970) 491-4680 to drop their Planned Leave

  30. How does a University Withdrawal affect Planned Leave? • It does not; a University Withdrawal and Planned Leave are two completely separate options for students requiring time off from the university

  31. Departmental and College Reports • Identify students on planned leave • Share reason for leave • Create opportunity for intervention prior to departure and as students return • Ensure students stay connected to department while away on planned leave

  32. Bringing Students Back • Registrar will send email outreach to students as registration approaches encouraging students to return from Planned Leave • Departments can provide outreach to students on Planned Leave and encourage them to register and return

What if a student fails to return from Planned Leave? • There is no penalty to students who do not return to CSU • The official CSU transcript for such students will reflect University-sanctioned Planned Leave for one semester and then a gap in enrollment for any subsequent terms away from CSU • Students will be required to go through the readmissions process through the Office of Admissions should they decide to return at a later time
