Authors Tea • Share the work • Partner with your Speech Language Pathologist to address literacy and language objectives (OTs to address motor) • Set the date • Great end of the year activity • Write the stories- Not as hard as it sounds! • Caroline Musselwhite suggested guidelines • Help students select age appropriate topics • Use repeatable story lines • Rhythm and rhyme make for fun easy reading

Create the Books Books need to be durable (card stock, tag board, copy paper mounted on tag board) Hand written or typed (graphic word processing software) One line per page for early readers Repeatable story line Illustrate the pages Draw borders for more creativity Create a cover Write a brief “About the Author” on the back cover Laminate for increased durability

  4. Invitations Students create the invitations and deliver to family and school friends or classrooms Administrators, service providers, secretaries, counselors, etc…anyone with a special relationship to your student(s)

  5. Plan the Tea….keep it simple • Let students assist with the planning • Shop during a community based trip if possible • Let students make table decorations

  6. Host the Tea • Set up chairs for guests, kids can sit on the floor • Children who are non-verbal can read their books using their alternate communication system • Demonstrate the use of peers/regular ed. students to turn pages, etc. • Stand near your student to provide support as needed • Enlist the audience to snap a rhythm or join in the repeatable story line (this can help shy readers) • Let students serve the refreshments Your students will be so proud, Parents will be so thrilled!
