  1. Lesson 34:Paul’s Arrival in Rome and Imprisonment for Two Years (27:1-44)

  2. I. Overview of the Passage & Helpful Facts for Further Bible Study • Following the shipwreck, Paul & company safely made it to the island of Malta (28:1-10). • Malta (a.k.a. its ancient name, Melita) was 58 miles south of Sicily (28:1). • The natives, perhaps providentially, extended unusual kindness for 3 months (28:2, 11). • Paul was bitten by a poisonous viper but miraculously suffered no harm (28:3-6). • Paul miraculously healed the sick and diseased on the island of Malta (28:7-10).

Overview of the Passage & Helpful Facts for Further Bible Study • Paul made the final trek of his journey, as a prisoner, to the city of Rome (28:11-16). • After three months in Malta, Julius sailed his prisoners toward Rome (28:11). • Then, the prisoners were transported over land the remaining ~150 miles to Rome. • Paul finally arrived in Rome, about three years after being arrested in Jerusalem (16).

Overview of the Passage & Helpful Facts for Further Bible Study • Even in prison, Paul labored for the Lord’s sake and His gospel for two years (28:17-31). • One of the first things Paul did in Rome was call the Jewish leaders to him (28:17-22). • Paul preached the gospel of Jesus and His kingdom to the Jewish leaders (28:23). • The response of the Jewish leaders to the gospel was divided (28:24-29). • Paul was imprisoned in Rome (in a rented house) for two years (28:30-31).

Overview of the Passage & Helpful Facts for Further Bible Study • After the two years, Paul was released from Roman custody for a time. • From Biblical records, all we know of his Post-Acts life is from 1 & 2 Timothy and Titus. • At the very least, he visited Macedonia (1 Tim. 1:3); Crete (Tit. 1:5); Nicopolis (Tit. 3:12); Miletus (2 Tim. 4:20); Troas (2 Tim. 4:13); maybe Spain (Rom. 15:28). • During this time, he wrote 1 Timothy and Titus. • From historical records, we know that Paul was imprisoned in Rome one last time. • During this time, he wrote 2 Timothy, and his time of death was close (2 Tim. 4:6). • Around 68 A.D., Paul was beheaded.

II. • Significant Truths from this Passage for Our Understanding • The Biblical truths of and the preaching of Jesus and His kingdom cannot be separated! • Man often seeks to emphasize one over the other or one without the other. • New Testament preaching always ties Jesus to His kingdom & the kingdom to Jesus! • Preaching in Acts always kept the two together (cf. 1:3, 6; 8:12; 20:24-31; 28:23, 31).

II. • Significant Truths from this Passage for Our Understanding • God’s message of salvation does not change based on time, location or audience! • About 30 years after Pentecost, Paul was still preaching Jesus and His kingdom! • About 1,500 miles away from Jerusalem, Paul was still preaching the same message! • To Jews, Gentiles, slaves, free, men, women, the message of salvation was the same!

Practical Points of Application for Our Lives • May we be known for extending extraordinary kindness and hospitality to strangers! • The sight of our brethren should spark thanksgiving and encouragement in us! • Even when things don’t seem to go our way, may we make opportunities for the gospel! • May we never be ashamed to preach about the Lord Jesus and His kingdom/church!
