  2. WHERE IS THE WILDLIFE

  3. WHAT DO WE KNOW • The wildlife habitat has been considerably eroded in recent years. • The elephant population is increasing (89 000-120 000 in 2000-2008) -HWC • Rhino numbers in decline • Trends for other species not clear due to lack of regular inventories.

  4. WHAT DO WE KNOW • Climate change will have an impact on wildlife habitat. • Poaching is on the increase. • Ownership of wildlife is an issue in some areas • Wildlife is a driver of tourism & CAMPFIRE • There is more species diversity outside Parks • The sector is facing challenges in line with trends in country as a whole.

  5. WHAT ARE THE OPPORTUNITIES • Network of national parks areas-but facing challenges. • Rich history of participatory wildlife management (CAMPFIRE)-Upscale? • Conservancy approach-wildlife versus cattle ranching. Role for community conservancies? • TFCAs-To what extend has Zimbabwe benefited?

  6. WHAT SHOULD BE DONE • Re-discover strategic position of wildlife & other natural resources • Establish & periodically monitor what we have (inventories) • Popularize wildlife as an economic asset (asset based conservation). • Capacitate key players & strengthen PPCP)
