  1. How often should we do tree health assessment? Tree health assessment is a vital tool for foresters and arborists. Tree health assessments can help prevent potential problems before they occur, and it can provide insight on the best course of action to take in order to sustain healthy trees. Tree health assessments can be performed every year, but some tree species require more frequent evaluations than others. Tree health assessments can provide information about a tree's structural condition, biological condition, and the risks a tree might face. Tree health assessments are different from Tree Risk Assessments in that Tree Health Assessments do not include judgement of the hazard a specific tree may pose to people or property. Tree health assessments examine things such as nutrient status, pest/pathogen pressure, reproductive capacity, crown morphology, and wood decay. Tree health assessments can be used to provide information about insect infestations or disease susceptibility. Tree health assessments are usually conducted every year on young trees throughout their lifespan. Tree Health Assessments can also indicate whether a tree is suitable for the intended use of the site (i.e., future construction site, roadside tree). Tree health assessments should be completed prior to crown release, stressful events (roots exposed), excavation, or other activities that may affect the tree's health. Tree Health Assessments should also be completed before treatment options are considered because they will indicate whether or not there is a need for treatment at all. Tree Health Assessments can also provide a basis for Tree Risk Assessments, which may be performed in addition to

  2. Tree Health Assessments or when Tree Health Assessments are not possible because of safety concerns. In order to perform tree health assessments, you need to have previous knowledge of trees and how they work, an understanding of Tree and Forest Health concepts, and the relevant Tree and Forest Health information. Remember that Tree and Forest Health is a constantly changing entity due to environmental factors such as climate change, biological factors such as disease or insect pressure, animal damage from deer or beavers, human pressures on trees from land development projects, air pollution taking its toll on trees, etc. Tree Health Assessments are most effective when they are combined with hazard Tree Risk Assessments in order to determine the impact of different stressors on tree health. Tree risk assessments are more complete, but Tree Health Assessments will provide essential information about how you can help mitigate Tree and Forest Health issues while Tree Risk Assessments AUTHOR BIO: Dustin Pope, the President of Tree Doctor, wisdom is stored in the optimum health of the trees, plants, and shrubs in the landscape of San Diego.
