  3. Senior Seminar Goal To spotlight students’ strengths and interests through academic discovery

What is Senior Seminar? • 80 hours of project work • Topic of students’ choice • On-Site Advisor who is an expert in the field • Documentation of the hours and learning • Senior teacher who oversees progress • Formal presentation of learning • 20 hours of related research • Reading related research • Interviewing experts in the field

  5. The Senior Seminar Handbook • All parameters defined • All projects have the same graded assignments • All graded assignments scored with a common rubric

  6. Who takes this course? • All New Albany High School Seniors enrolled full time at NAHS • AP and Honors students • General Education students • Students who are English Language Learners • Students with special needs

  7. Senior Enrollment of 47 Students in 1994 • Senior Team • Selected to represent 4 academic disciplines • Each had about 12 students • Created a “4 stage” program • Project, Service, Career and Teambuilding • Added Technology Proficiency

  8. Senior Enrollment of 279 students for 2014 • Senior Team Now - 9 teachers on staff • 2 English, 2 Math, 2 Social Studies teachers • Performing Arts teacher • Foreign Language teacher • Intervention Specialist • Each has 22 – 25 students with multiple sections • Science provides a parallel course • Senior Environmental Research Course

  10. Senior Seminar Blended • First run as Senior Seminar Summer Institute-Blended (SSSI-BL); now an after-school Blended course • Using Schoology as my Learning Platform • Allows more students to participate while having long-distance experiences

  11. Transitioning from F2F to Blended Professional Development Course at New Albany High School • Introduction to designing online courses • Supervised Practicum

  13. Transitioning from F2F to Blended • Collecting all my course materials • Examining the purpose and backwork of the assignments • Creating online benchmark assignments to provide instruction • Developing ways to build relationships and have discussions

  14. Beginning the course • Meeting with all students and parents • Overview of the course and its organization • Providing examples of the online instruction and expectations • Setting a formal schedule of F2F meetings and Office Hours • Stressing the importance of email

  16. My roles • Create and organize the class content • Clarify assignments as needed • Reassure students they were on the right track • Regroup and add instruction when a lesson • went poorly “Mrs. Cheney always answers her email fast!”
