  2. Spanish civil war 1936-1939 Background: • Spain has been under coalition of landowners, the army and the catholic church • Opposition came from peasants, workers and the people of Catalonia and Basque who wanted self- government . • In 1931, the king abdicated and Republic was established and ran by socialists and liberals. • Trade unionist and communists organized violent strikes and riots which resulted in the right-wing government being elected in 1933. • The left organized strikes again but they were put down by the army under General Francisco Franco. • The public were against his actions and a coalition of socialists, communists and anarchists came to power. • Opposition to this new government came together under nationalists and consisted of the church, the army and the Spain's fascist group Key points • Started after attemptby a group of Spanish Army generals, supported by the conservative Confederatión Espanola de Derechas Autónomas (C.E.D.A), Carlist groups and the fascistic Falange Española de las J.O.N.S. to overthrow the government under the leadership of president Manuel Adana. • War between Republicans and Nationalists. • Republicans were supported by Soviet Union and Mexico • Nationalists were supported by Italy, Germany, and Portugal • The war increased tensions between communists and fascists before World War II • Ended in April 1939 with a success of overthrowing the republican government in Spain and establishment of dictatorship under general Francisco Franco.

  3. How did it contribute to the failure of collective security • Each group was supported by foreign countries which provided financial aid and military force. • Increased the tensions between communists and fascists around the world. • League of nations failed to solve the problems • Non-intervention committee was created to ensure no countries support the Spanish civil war, but it was inefficient.
