  4. Julius Caesar • Rise to power after Civil Wars in Rome • Assassination in 44 BC • Followed by Octavian (becomes Augustus) • With Augustus, we see the end of the Roman Republic and the beginning of the Roman Empire

  5. Rome Under Constantine • Follows Diocletian (many reforms) • Extends religious toleration to the Christians, who had previously been persecuted • His tolerance of the Christians is significant—Christianity becomes the lasting legacy of the Roman Empire to the modern west • Moves the capital from Rome to Constantinople
